I hit my power button and my xbox immediately shuts off and doesnt try to restart. It doesnt even stay on long enough for the fan to kick on. When I tap the button, the RED X comes on the front panel, but shuts off immediately. If I hold the power button ON, the blue GND light on the chip flashes, and the other blue light stays on, however the box doesnt turn on. Are these lights telling me something? Any idea what to look at? Does this have something to do with the chip or power supply?? I've gone over the solder joints for 3 days and they are all ok as far as I can see.

Up to a couple days ago, the box ran fine with no problems, then I go to turn it on and it wont turn on at all. I havent left it on for anymore than an hour at a time at the most....please help...I'm ready to throw this thing out the window and back over it with my car!!!

Thanks!

Well, like I was saying, the xbox working FINE for months....I didnt touch it with a solder gun....it just stopped turning on. Almost seems like a power supply problem more than a chip problem. How can I test it without the chip? Just pull it off?? Or completely uninstall it?

If you have a ver. 1.6 box, its the red alternate 5v line.
If you have a ver. 1.0 - 1.5 box, there is no alternate power line.

Actually, you could just unplug all the wires from the chip itself.

when i do....nothing happens.....I have a 1.2 version, so when i unplug the chip, no power. Does that mean bad power supply?

Sounds like a power supply issue to me. I've worked on a few computers with bad pwr supplies. One still put out enough juice to run the cpu fan, but not enough to do anything else. Maybe yours is putting out enough to light the 3.3v led but not enough to light the 5v led(flashing). Hard to say. I don't know if a standard ATX power supply tester would work on it. Maybe you can test it on a buddies?
Hopefully someone else can shed some light on your problem.

I had a 1.4 w/2.3Pro that did this and i troubleshot it for months and couldn't find anything wrong. No trace issues, no solder splashes, all pins tested fine. If it sat for a while sometimes it would boot fine. I came to the conclusion that it was a heat problem, couldn't find any other reason it was fragging. Figured it damaged the video processor. I later discovered that 1.2-1.6 versions must have the DVD and HDD put in for proper cooling, oh well. Ended up buying a new one and I back in business.

Problem solved. The problem was #9 solder point on the pin header. After inspecting closely, it looked absolutely FINE...however, after going over EVERYTHING about 70 times, I decided to push on the pin header...pin by pin to make sure they were secure. Pin #9 was loose enough to move the pin in and out when adequate pressure was applied. A resoldering of that pin solved the issue. Moral?? Even though the solder points LOOK good, they must be tested!!
