Is new a hard drive really needed for your x box?

If you want more than a couple xbox games/movies/emulators/etc. stored on your hard drive, yes, it is really needed.
I suggest the biggest 5400rpm drive you can find. :wink:

if yuo want a very flexible xbox with a lot of capabilities, buy a bigger hd. a WAY bigger hd.
i agree with leiblein. just get the biggest 5200rpm drive you can find. i myself am planning on an 8mb cache and 7200rpm drive, but it's not really that necessary because the performance difference isn't that much if it's even noticable at all, but i don't want the performance to degrade over time heh just me i guess...

My HDD is also a 8mb 7200rpm HDD, but that was before I heard about over heating issuses.
I'm not worried though, I hear the heating issues are only with cheap drives and older drives.

Are you the same guy I talked with on IRC? You must be. He asked the same question, except relating to memory. There is no set size/speed/quality of any computer part! You can easily upgrade a PC with a 20GB hard drive to a 2TB hard drive (suiting the BIOS will be able to detect it is 2TB, but I'd figure it could, considering xbox BIOS's can detect 2TB).TheBallitician said:

it all depends on what you wanna do with your xbox if u need a new hdd or not. but ya if you plan on copying games and movies and stuff you definitly need a nice fat hdd 250gb works well for me
