All hail NeoGAF, that place where more than usually dedicated games enthusiasts do all the hardcore research for me. The mega-forum's recent activities include an intriguing Project Gotham Racing 5 speculation thread, which suggests that the outfit behind Microsoft's strictly unconfirmed next generation racer may not be relative unknown Lucid Games, but the mighty Rare. This may come as something of a shock - Rare hasn't released a racing game since Diddy Kong Racing for the DS in 2007, after all, and hardly ranks among the genre's champion performers. But then, that's probably why they've been on a hiring spree across late 2012 and early 2013, signing up veterans of such projects as Motorstorm, WipEout 2048, Race Driver: GRID 2, DiRT 3 and Driver: San Francisco. Hmmm.

Another Gaffer has dug up some decidedly indicative concept artworks by one Gilles Ketting - I've posted them above and below. They could be linked to an "undisclosed project" Ketting worked on while contracting at Rare from March to April 2012. Alas, yet another Gaffer alleges that the game has now been cancelled.

Speculation as to an impending Project Gotham Racing 5 reveal mushroomed in February after Microsoft renewed its Project Gotham Racing trademark. The Lucid Games connection comes courtesy of Polygon and VG247 sources.

What do you think? Thanks to Rarefandabase for the spot.
