is there a hardware reason why a liteon wont be recognised by xbox?

Hi all, please excuse the noob. I've googled things to death and am only confusing myself further. I have a fat xbox 360 that my son plays on, its totally standard. I thought it might be nice to pick up a cheap 360 for him to keep at his grandparents for when he goes to stay. I've bought another fat 360 off ebay that was dirt cheap, with a HDD and PSU (so not a total waste of money), and it was described as not reading discs, - no problem I thought, I expected to be changing the laser as I have on our other machine.
Unfortunately the reality is that the liteon DG16D2S drive doesn't even open and the green power light just flashes, which I'm learning indicates that it doesn't recognise the drive ( ? ). The drive doesn't make any clunking noises, the drive belts are in place, there is 5 volts and 1.8 volts on the voltage regulator, so I know its getting power. I've since seen that the seller is also selling a number of Flashed xboxes and I'm wondering if this has been a failed flash and now a dead drive? Is there anything that I can do to try and get it working or identify the problem? I want to end up with a standard unmodified xbox that my son can go online with without risking getting banned.
Thanks for any suggestions.

The problem is the tray status has been shorted and you need a new pcb board. Once you have that, original pcb should still be detected in JungleFlasher, (have you attempted to see if it is recognized.) then you would need to get dvd from original pcb (if that indeed was original drive), flash it to new pcb and it should be operational.

Your problem might not have been isolated to dvd, as op has stated in his OP. One way to isolate problem and determine tray status error, is put any dvd in xbox and if flashing green seizes than its tray status on pcb and needs replacing.

Thankyou for all the responses...it would appear to be fixed!! I had already plugged the drive in and out many times without a change, and then one time I powered on via an xbox controller and not via the on button and went into xbox settings and did initial set up; when the unit booted up next the drive fired up and has worked perfectly ever since. Thanks for all suggestions.
