Hi NeverzinhoWhat an awesome post you made there mcornbill. While i'm probably a little ahead of Dimrain in terms of soldering, I'm still pretty new in this world. I've enjoyed reading your post.
Thanks mate, I try to be as clear and concise as possible and after many years of soldering you start to pick these things up. Just as I'm sure you are in the process of doing now.
A long time ago I used to use an electric soldering iron, struggling away for months not understanding why I couldn't solder properly. That was down to the cheap soldering iron simply being too weak for the job in hand. I switched to gas and haven't looked back since
That's not to say you need a gas soldering iron to do any of this, far from it in some cases. But when you do a lot of modding you eventually find that some solder points, particular ones connected to large ground plates on the motherboard, just will not melt unless you have a powerful/hot iron on them. But remember that having your soldering iron too hot is a good way to burn out nearby components/traces/pads etc, especially on delicate pcb's like the DVD drive circuit boards. At least the actual console motherboard is a bit more forgiving!
Cheers
