Is this wire unnecessary?

Yes there is no need for you to use the yellow ground wire on the nandx. Just ignore it solder all the other wires in the correct locations and read away.

I clip my yellow wire right off

Didn't we try telling you..... try another USB port and even a USB hub.

If they both fail, then it sounds like you blew your NAND-X.
