BENQ Issue Swapping out Broken Drive

I have been attempting to fix a 360 with a broken dvd drive. I do computer repair and have fixed several playstation 3's so I figured i'd give it a whack.

His drive was not opening so i took the box, and the drive apart. several plastic pieces inside were murdered (im assuming someone kicked it while opening) and I was in no mood to take all that crap out and replace it. So i ordered an identical drive and swapped it over. (mistake 1)

I threw a dvd in it and it work fine so i gave it back. it then came back to me with him saying it wasn't playing games. It would act like its starting the game and then just return to home. His xbox isn't connected to xbox live (nor has it been for a long while) so I thought maybe an update would fix it. (mistake 2)

Of course the update didn't fix it... that is when i found out about MicroSHAFTs dvd drives being mated to the original motherboard. Phuck.

I then removed the original pcd board from the original drive and installed it on the replacement drive (yay soldering!). Everything seemed fine so i threw a game in (black cops II or something :p) and i receive one red light and an error code on screen "e66. we at microshaft just plain don't like you and have have fun laughing at your problems. HAHAHAHAHa you lose". (at least thats how i read it)

Upon more research it would seem that the dash number and the drive number need to be the same? (or something like that) So i then "deleted" the system update (using the trick on the storage screen) and updated again. same problem. SO im wondering if i flash the drive if that will/can fix the issue. I don't care about playing back ups (or however its worded to sound legal) i just want to be able to play original store bought games again.

Im seeking help because Ive made enough mistakes and figured i better find out before i make it worse. I've yet to find anyone with the same exact problem as me and i haven't seen anything that looks like it may work. (also, if it helps im pretty sure I have an extra working drive from another system as well.)

If this is in the wrong section let me know also thanks in advance for any help

Are the original DVD drive and replacement the same model?

If so, a PCB swap should work fine. If it doesn't, you've either connected something wrong or not soldered a wire properly.

There are only two ribbon connectors and they are totally different. They seem fine.

I'll recheck the solder joints but Im a pretty good solder if i do say so myself. I think they are also fine. As far as the wires themselves are concerned i made sure I labelled them all before removing them so I know they are in the right order.

(i really hope its just a bad solder joint)

ASSuming everything this if fine. you don't think updating the console with the replacement drive in it jack up anything?

(I'll let you know soon about the connections.)

When u flashed the update with new drive was this drive pre 13599 or post 13599. This is when we need to know make of drive..... You then said u swapped pcb because you didn't know that the dvd key needs to match. My question then needs to be answered if it is pre or post as the console might be updated right now but the old pcb is pre 13599.

what dash are you updating from ? sounds to me like it has a spoofed drive in there and not updating giving you the E66

Post some pictures of the original drive and your replacement drive, and you might get some more detailed advice. When replacing an xbox 360 dvd drive you have to use the same exact model of drive. Martin C said it all above ^.
I can post up pics later if need be. but It will take me a while. they are EXACTLY the same though. all numbers match on the top and the pcb boards are the same as well.

I have not "flashed" any thing. im not sure how to check to see if its 13599. I have not modified any firmware if thats what your asking.

the drive i took out is (as far as i know) the original drive and was working before someone karate kicked it. I haven't spoofed anything and i know the owner hasn't. I have no idea what dash it had before (don't remember) but now it has the one with the "tiles". the latest one. it updates fine. i just get the error if i start the xbox with a game in it or if i put one in and attempt to run it.

thanks for the hep guys hopefully we can get this figured out.

Now I could be totally off here but when I get units that get that error it's because someone has spoofed the drive. Have you tried reading the board to see if it was spoofed to get the original board info needed from JF?

Sorry didn't see n1ght0wl had already stated this.
