That is the ground point. I don't know why but all xbox's including the phats, the ground point is kinda weird because the solder seems to not go with it.

Also your solder isn't that good, i see some cold solders there.

is the cold solder the dull looking points on j2c3?

I agree. That point should be able to be tinned very easy. As said above, get a scrap PCB and practice soldering.

  1. Clean tip is a necessity (wipe off with a wet sponge or wet rag)
  2. Flux is a necessity
  3. Tin the tip
  4. Heat the point on the board slightly
  5. let the point on the board melt the solder and not the soldering pencil
  6. Don't over flux (you will just make a mess and have to clean it up latter)
  7. Don't use to much solder. It doesn't take much. You should be using .032 or 1mm solder. Any bigger than that is asking for problems.

;)

Start with these tips and practice, practice and practice some more before you tackle your console. Good luck!

You could simply use any GND point the motherboard, or didn't you know that already?

One more tip.

If you have a hard time getting a wire to stick to the board then it's either becasue you don't have the board tinned enough or the wire tinned enough. You shouldn't have to apply any solder as you are soldering the wire to the board. Just line up the wire with the point and touch it with the pencil. The solder should melt on both the wire and the board and marry the 2 together. :)

Use any of the copper circles on the motherboard or the A/V or USB shielding for GND point.

The whole point of the TX Coolrunner install is that you can solder before you start. I would suggest you practice on a dead board first.

Honestly i find hard to believe you have soldered before.
your soldering skills are bad, no disrespect.
You have plenty of videos on youtube, you can learn alot from them.
Very briefly:
- always clean the surface with Isopropyl alcohol, if you don't have this you can use normal alcohol but be sure to dry it out very well
- always use flux
- always clean the solreding iron tip
- always tin the soldering iron tip
- don't touch your solder with your iron, just touch the surface you want to add solder on. ALWAYS
- Always clean the surface after solder you Isopropyl alcohol.
and yes, practice practice practise.

BTW, the solder on motherboards are usually old, that makes them harder to melt. That's why you should tin them. That makes them easy to melt.
You can use the bottom connections as well. You can look at the points and watch the track. Depending on where the track is you can solder that point in the top or bottom of the board. That makes it easier to connect.
For example, for the reading of nand on phats there is only 1/2 tracks in the top of the board. Wich means all of the rest are beneath. Therefore it's easier to solder it in the bottom side.
