Jasper 16mb R-Jtag Won't Boot to Xell Every Time?

  • Console Type: Jasper 16mb
  • Programmer Used: JRP v2.0
  • NAND Size: 16
  • Dashboard version: 16747
  • CB Version: 6754
  • Screenshot of NAND details from J-Runner:
  • J-Runner log
  • updflash.bin log (if applicable)
  • Image of the CR4 XL
  • Images of close-up soldering to motherboard
  • Was the console working before you started: Y
  • Do you get a green debug light appear on the CR4 XL chip every 4-5 seconds: Only when it's going to instaboot otherwise only 3 or four flashes.
  • How long is the light on for each time - 1/2 second?
  • Detailed Description of the Problem:

Jasper 16mb CR4 XL, read Nand, made ECC, wrote ECC.

JRP V2 said there was one bad block but it said it remapped it.

It boots to Xell about 50% of the time, when it boots to Xell it's instant if not it won't boot at all, the green light flashes 3 or 4 flashes at times then stops.

I have tried the 330ohm resistor on the AUD clamp and it didn't want to boot at all, so went back to the 470ohm, all dip switches are off, I tried each one in turn and it made no difference.

Dont know if i matters but you did solder the aud_clamp to the tiny resistor. In the guide it says that you dont have to anymore...

This doesnt matter either way. As you bridge 1-3 with solder that point is connected to pad 2.

To the op.
Try moving the 3 way switch to towards the jumper. this will bypass the jumper for resistors all together, and may solve your problem. As for 3 cycle boots, I would try tuning a bit, and see if you can get that down to 1.

Thanks for the replies, I did solder that point to the resistor.

I also re-routed the wires under the motherboard to this:

http://team-xecuter.com/forums/show...XL-PHAT-JASPER-16MB-Install-Setup-and-Diagram

I tried switching that switch across and it booted first time but my hopes were soon dashed as it did not boot at all next time or the time after but after that it did once, it's got me buffaloed at the moment. It may boot 3 times in a row on the first pulse but won't boot at all for the next 3 or 4 times.

Why are you booting Xell What is keeping you from creating and installing a RGH Image 16747-After that I would put that console back in the cage and run it on Rater to check the tuning
Stick with the default settings no caps see what it does ??

Do you have access to a JRP-V2, and a rater cable. I am fairly certain, if it stops glitching, and still only boots 50% of the time, there is a problem with the jtag wiring. it would be helpful if we could see where the rater says the console is failing.

I would bet you are right, especially as it will boot first time after it's been off for a while, it does sound like a dodgy solder joint, I am going to redo them today.

If that doesn't work I will study up how to connect the rater and post the results, thanks for your advice.

I connected the JR V2 and rater cables, I set it to CR4 is this what I need?

The whole time it did the middle green light kept flashing on the console but it never booted to Xell.

The middle green light blinks when the disc drive is disconnected. as for the rater log you posted, it is successfully glitching. so I would start focusing on the jtag qsb settings. it may also be a bad solder joint on the bottom of the GPU for TMS/TDI, I would try rewiring for RGH2+, and see if it works better.

So remove the Jtag Qsb or just switch it to off?

I can rewire it to RGH2+, what about the ECC file I wrote to it, would I just use the nanddumps I got first when I read them in J Runner and select RHG2+ & CR4, create a new ECC and then write it to Nand?

Also I really appreciate your help with this, and it's nice to know "I" didn't stuff things up as this is my first attempt.

Yes, rewire for rgh2+. create ecc for rgh2+ from original nand dumps, and write that ecc to nand. you dont really have to touch the jtag qsb, but if you want to be safe, switch the 3 way switch all the way to the egde of the qsb(Away from jumper, not toward it as this is the the no resistor option), and turn the on/off switch to off.

I still have it set for R-Jtag as yesterday after cleaning up flux around the solder joints and putting in the DVD drive it booted ten times in a row on the first glitch, I thought I had it but was skeptical, so this morning I tried it again and it was back to it's old tricks, only glitching every few times.

I removed and resoldered the yellow, white and blue wires underneath this morning with no difference.

But I notice after it warmed up, it's back to booting first time nearly every time, like 9 out of ten.

Also others are saying their CR4's make a noise when glitching, mine is silent.

I am going to try the RGH2+ just to see what happens. But one good thing I am learning a lot about the 360.

Okay still working on this:

I removed the R-Jtag Qsb and wired it with the transistors/resistors, I saw someone else do it on here and it worked fine for them with the CR4 XL, but mine still won't boot to Xell all the time, I got a new CR4 XL and it does the same thing, but actually boots to Xell less times than the first one. And again if it doesn't boot to Xell on the first glitch cycle it won't ever, but the green light will stop flashing after two or three tries and the rater will report it glitched successfully.

I checked the TDI / TMS connections to ground and both showed 1.51k ohms. Everything has been resoldered and checked ad nauseum with my DMM which measures down to fractions of an ohm.

Before I bight the bullet and go to RGH2+ is there anything else I can try?

Here is a rater log set to Phat, the rater log set to CR4 is identical to the one that I posted earlier, the rater reports it glitched successfully in 1 cycle but the console did not boot to Xell.

Okay this morning I rewired it for RGH2+ and connected it to JR2, I have the power supply plugged in with the console off, now I selected RGH2 & CR4 using my original nand dump, it creates the ECC file but when I go to write it, it says this:

RGH2 Selected
CR4 Selected
Jasper 16MB Manually Selected
ECC created
Version: 10
Flash Config: 0x00000000
Can not Continue

Now I hate to say this but when using the rater earlier, I had the rater cable and the green, blue and white connectors connected to the QSB's.

I later read that having the console powered on could damage your JR v2?

Is this correct, and have I blown it up, it still works with the rater and the green light is on but just comes up with the message above?

Does the console still power on?

I fixed it, the yellow wire that goes to the programmer was loose inside the connector and didn't push in all the way, I had a problem with it when I first got the JR V2, as it was in back to front and would not go onto the pin, I pulled it out and turned it around, now I have to push it in with a fine jewelers screwdriver to make a good connection.

Now for the good news it wrote the ECC file and just firing it up a few times with the default starter settings it glitches and loads Xell in around 45 seconds.

I have some tuning to do now!

Thanks for every ones help and advice, lucky I am patient others might have thrown it out the window by now, but all's well that ends well.

Re: Jasper 16mb R-Jtag Won't Boot to Xell Every Time? FIXED

I put in a tuning cap, 47pf and it boots a bit quicker, I created the XE Build Image and copied it to a USB stick and it wrote it to the Nand, that part was easy. Just have to set up the HDD / Dashlaunch / XexMenu / FSD, I wanted to do it separately as this is my guinea pig, so it will be easier in future. I like to understand how things work.

From only booting when it wants too, to now taking no longer than 45 seconds, most times it's between 5 and 25 seconds, so for a super stubborn Jasper on RGH2+ it's pretty darn good.

I may fiddle with the dips and see if I can get it down a bit more but I am more than happy with it at the moment, thanks TX and all those that helped.
