I got a cheap xbox to play with (mod) before attempting anything on my better xboxes.
I had intended to do this via the RGH and have purchased a NANDX and coolrunner chip ready.

By chance the xbox I got is a Falcon with an older dash (2.0.6717.0) which could be JTAGable rather than RGH.

So now the noobish questions:

1: Is there any benefit for going the JTAG route rather than RGH or vice-vesa. I have been finding hard to get clear info as many things refer to RGH as JTAG.

2: Does JTAGing require a chip like a coolrunner?

3: Is this correct?
Way I think of it currently RGH you read NAND from board then after fiddling write it back to the coolrunner chip which exploits the reset glitch and excutes the code stored on board.

JTAGing you can use the NANDX to read AND then write modified info back directly to the nand without need for coolrunner or similar chip.

Thank you for someone taking a moment to clear up a few things for me.

I think your first job is to look over the JTAG and RGH tutorials. It will pretty much explain everything you need to know. You'll need to understand what you're doing in any case, so no time like the present.

I have read both and although most seperate the software / hardware portions they seem clear enough. It does not really help me with question 1 however.

There is no real difference. They both enable to console to run unsigned code. The big difference is how you get your CPU key. What console do you have? Does it have an HDMI port? Like Martin said though you can find the answers to your questions by searching the forums. Let us know how everything goes.

So no issues / hassles with updates / things built into games etc changing something that will screw the JTAG exploit along the JTAG route?

Thanks

I've seen posts / threads about the protecting the efuses and I assumed this was protect against certain pitfals. I assumed updates auto installed from games disks and the like.

I'll let you know how it goes.

It doesn't seem like you've read any "road maps" for your trip down the "JTAG route".

As long as you read and understand everything should work out perfectly. If you mean can a game update/system update mess up your JTAG/RGH, only if you let it. I know you say you are planning on using an older console to "mess" around with but please do yourself a favor and research before you even begin. It will save you a lot of trouble down the JTAG/RGH road.

Well as I said, the stickys and tuts here cover most things, including eFuse protection and why we do it.

Updates can be blocked with Dashlaunch too.

Good luck!

Currently there are no titles that with "auto install" updates. As long as you take precaution and know what you are doing you will have no problems when it comes to system updates.

If its jtaggable then i say just jtag it.
What's the point in buying a coolrunner? when all you need is a couple of diodes.
Jtag will save you money, and you'll have an instant boot.

Using a Coolrunner supports the scene, that's why. Also, he'll get 24/7 support if he purchases a Coolrunner.
