OK, a bit confused on what to explore next...

Just got direct wiring working on nand-x and was able to dump the nand.
Verified that the box is modable via degraded 1.1/360 flash tool.
no bad blocks in dump (yay!)
multiple dumps, all matched.
Falcon MB (rev 3 according to flash tool).

started following the software side of the tutorial linked below as ended up with a non-standard jtag setup.
http://www.team-xecuter.com/forums/showthread.php?t=55189
red wire is soldered onto dvd tray wire (looks like the image below the text "This is how I did it:"
yellow wire is AUD_CAMP series.

Problems:
After following the tutorial to step 27.
console boots to an error screen e 79.
verified that I had the jumper/switch matching the image in the tutorial for the QSB.

figured I should flash the original file back and did so.
console boots to RROD (3 red flashing lights).
got the subcode: 0020. (console worked prior to taking the QSBs involved in nand flashing off and doing direct wiring).
At this point I figured something went wrong with some soldering elsewhere....

I then for the heck of it disconnected the DVD drive and tried booting up (still original firmware) and it booted up (at least no RROD). This confuses things for me...

Not sure what to look at from here. Spent some time reading around and didn't get much in the way of hints.

Some concepts I didn't catch onto while reading:
-power cycle? not sure if this was turn on/off or remove/reconnect power.
-disable jtag? no idea short of removing wires...

Will try to edit/add some images shortly of the red/yellow wires and jtag QSB.

Glad to hear that you got some nand dumps from your board. Check the soldering of your jtag wiring, from the pics you posted it looks ok. Check that you have the diodes facing the correct way, what diodes are you using aswell?
Generally I find that falcon boards after flashing should be switched off from the mains and then disconnect the power lead, wait 10 secs and plug it back in and switch it on. Flashing your original nand back and booting with the jtag wiring still connected will give you a rrod error of 0020, Its happened to me before. Does it boot up to the welcome screen with the dvd drive disconnected?

EDIT Can you post another picture of the jtag qsb as you cant really see the point J2D2.4. From the picture there is it doesnt look like its soldered very well.

May I say- DOH!

I can't believe both myself and the person doing the soldering missed this, especially upon re-inspection.

I bet that is it, will find out (much) later today.

Tried to keep the black ends (ends of the wire that are wrapped in black material in the original QSB kit) facing the same way as on the guide pictures... Using the stock nand-x wires, yellow is clipped from what normally goes to the ROL from the pin header on the jtag QSB. Red wire is intact (not clipped) from jtag QSB onto the DVD tray status pin of power... looks like http://lh6.ggpht.com/_NdYnuzTuG_Q/TDjzjQ4YIoI/AAAAAAAAADU/qqO6RkJJTf0/Red%20Solder.jpg

I gather this would be a power cycle then.

Yep, that was the confusing bit and hence why I posted this sans much more diagnostics on my end...

Edit:
OK, it was the solder joint missing solder. (I hear it was a tough joint as well).
thanks much... (if only I could figure out how to mark threads solved).
