I know I need a kernel below 8xxx but is that due to info in the nand? if I have the nand backup from one that's eligible and successfully jtaged. can I use it on another xeon that has a newer kernel to jtag it?
No. Updates blow eFuses that are in the CPU. There's no way around that. You can't downgrade or use another NAND dump. The NAND data has to be encrypted by the keys that are embedded in the matching CPU. You can't get the keys unless you have a vulnerable CB aka a 7xxx dash.
