Just a couple of questions after reading the "Textbook&

Well, I just had some questions that I couldn't find from the textbook. I really didn't want my first post to be one where I got yelled at for not reaing some FAQ or something like that.

I guess I'll just ask them here:

Why does the textbook not have a picture for the Phillips Drive?

I think I have something similar to the Samsung drive, because my botton notch on the inner drive is big, and so is the top notch of the inner drive. Every picture I have seen of the Samsung, only has the big notch on the bottom side, and is it that I am just seeing things wrong and I have a Samsung? I purchased mine at Wal-Mart in late December 06.

After reading about the first quarter of the textbook, I still feel like I don't have a good grip on this whole thing. It just seems all too complicated after coming from the PSP hacking/modding scene.

Everybody always says take the plunge, but I'm still worried about the costs. After looking in the textbook for the right SATA card or something, I don't think my pc has the right one, but I would need somebody to look at a screenshot of my pc to see.

If this is really not the right forum for these kinds of posts, please tell me where to post this for the appropriate help. Thanks!

The philips was not in retail systems.
You will need to find out what SATA chipset your pc has if at all.
Yes you may need to invest in a VIA vt6421a/l based chipset SATA PCI card but they are cheap.

If you are having problems understanding the tutorial then atleast you have the guts to say so i would advise getting some one else to flsah it for you as there is no shame in that.

Take a pic of the drive tray and post it here, we'll go from there. ;)

There it is. Does it matter how late I bought my console? I am saying that because of the possible XBL dashboard updates or whatever that may stop flashing or something like that. I mean if the drive is fine because I'm assuming its a Samsung (closest looking one to mine, but mine looks slightly different).

Which one is easier to flash Samsung or Hitachi? Just wondering if i am going to have an easier time finding parts/best chance of succeeding.

Your SATA chipset should be fine.

just read the tutorial http://www.360mods.net/Downloads/details/id=61.html

Check your drive here http://crunchgear.com/2007/02/14/do-you-have-a-quiet-drive-xbox-360/

plus you will need to open the 360 to tell what model number you have it's written on the back of the drive e.g ms28

Sorry, I meant to take a pic of the open tray (so we can see the cutouts) with your cellphone or something. That way we can at least confirm what brand drive you have. ;)

Re: Just a couple of questions after reading the "Textb

Great, thanks for the better drive comparison pic, PrimitiveX5. With a better picture than the one in the textbook, I can give you a clearer answer. It is a Samsung.

About SATA chipset. When comparing, I always had issues finding it in the textbook, am I looking for the wrong thing in comparing my computer to the textbook?

Now, I guess is where I need to get a torx-10 or something like that to open it? Not saying this so I don't have to open it, which I will anyway, but being bought as late as it was, won't it most likely be a MS28?

I know the MS25's are a lot easier to flash, how much more difficult will it be with the MS28? I will try to you get a pic of my drives either this morning or tonight, sorry I can't post them at the moment (not enough time).

You'll need a Torx 10 either way, I got a whole set of Torx bits at Wal-mart for less than $5. The ms28 isn't really any harder than the ms25, you just have to turn off the 360 and count to 10 then turn it back on at one point during the procedure which you don't have to do with the ms25. And you check 2 extra boxes in Xtreme Boot Maker when making your boot disk. Other than that it's the same.

Re: Just a couple of questions after reading the "Textb

After reading the front page with the new kernal/fuse blown news, I have even more questions. Sorry, I just question everything, especially since I am dealing with a $400 device.

Since I have been updating my 360 through the dashboard updates and game updates, am I too far to still have my drive flashed? Or is all that kernal stuff for expanded dashboard features.

After reading, I have a question about the drives. I'm getting the feeling that the specific burner/drive you use, has a big impact? Why is that? Also do the dvd's you use matter as well?

Once again, I will take a screenshot of the drives from my msinfo32 when I get home tonight.

It is just for "more hacking" and looking into ways of getting unsigned code to run on the system for running stuff like the Linux operating system or homebrew programs like media centers, emulators, alternate dashboards, etc.

Yes, they both matter, but everything depends on certain factors. Your DVD burner must support burning double layer discs and it should support bitsetting to DVD-ROM. Bitsetting to DVD-ROM helps the Xbox 360 read the backups.

Media is much more important. Different media uses different dyes in their discs. Slightly more expensive discs usually have higher quality dyes, which will result in less errors and better data retention. In simple terms, using higher quality media like Verbatim over that cheap pack of Playo means your discs are more likely to be read by the Xbox 360 and won't die after 6 months. The same cannot be said for cheaper media. You get what you pay for when it comes to DL media.

Here is a picture of my drives (granted one is Daemon).

Sorry, I forgot to post I at least knew you had to have a DL dvd drive because obviously most games are bigger than 4gigs (1 side of a dvd). Thanks though, I appreciate the help from everybody so far!
