I've just got myself a second hand 360 of ebay and all it said was wrong with it is that the drive has stopped reading discs but when it turned up I noticed that the xbox has already been opened up on it so I was wondering if it is possible if he has possibly messed up a flash on the drive which has caused it not to work properly.
Not had a chance to get into the xbox fully yet as I am without a T10 for the moment so I cannot find out what the last guy has done to it.
Just wondering if you've seen anything like this before and whether it's still possible for me to pull the key off the old drive so i can throw a new one in.
Cheers

Not acctually got round to trying out a proper 360 game on it yet because I'm at uni atm. I've tried a few music cds and dvds on it though and it just says disc unreadable.

Was it "unreadable disc" or "Put this disc in an Xbox 360 console" ?

"Unreadable disc" is probably just the laser, try dumping the firmware and see if the key looks good.

But if it says, "Put this disc in an Xbox 360 console" with an original that would mean incorrect key and there is no way to recover that from the console, only the DVD drive itself.

Well it just says unreadable disc so I will try to dump the firmware but I cannot use toolbox because it doesn't detect the dvds I place in the drive so it won't let me raw dump.
How else can I go about dumping the FW?

You would either have to get a new laser for the drive, which may fix the problem by itself, or desolder the tsop chip from the drive and dump it using an external programmer hooked to a PC to get the key. Then you would buy a new DVD drive for the 360 and patch the key in and it will work fine.

well I don't know whether or not the laser would solve the problem so any ideas on how I can go about getting the external programmer so i can try and make it cheaper than getting someone else to look at it or would it just be cheaper to send it off and get it read by someone else. I think it was about £35 to get the chip read from one website I looked at.
If you think the laser can solve the problem though can you give me a link to a uk site that sells them.
cheers

If it was a laser problem then your drive would be making a noise that wouldnt sound to happy. If the laser totally failed it wouldnt make a noise or sound at all like a moving part. Does your dvd drive make any sound or vibration at all?

Can't remember there being any sound at all other than the disc spinning and that was all. Left the 360 at home for now whilst I'm at uni though so can't check for definate till 2moz.
Although its a 78FK hitachi, is there no other way to dump the firmware to my comp other than using toolbox?
