Well obviously you can see I'm a rookie at this stuff but I do it for fun and it looks like it just got real FUN HaHa! I'm gonna need some help here guys if you would be so kind. I know zip about what resistor I'm going to need. I want to do this myself as a learning experience so could you direct me to the resistor I will need? I live in New York state so I'm guessing Radio Shack for the part.

Like I said I am doing this for fun so feel free to bust my balls!
If you can't laugh at yourself your doomed. :)

A 36 ohm 1/4 watt metal film resistor will do the job just fine (it's what I used in one of my slims)... The original part is a 34 ohm SMD resistor if you can get hold of one..

Thanks so much psykix for the help. Is this resistor a standard item that can be found at someplace like radioshack or is this a online item? If I can't find a exact match ohm wise should I stay above or below the 34 ohm?
EDIT: A quick search and this http://www.talonix.com/shop/item.aspx?itemid=9029

You're not the only one!

Going to see if I can fix this this afternoon :D
Hope you make out triquettrium. Any tips/advice or pics will be much appreciated. I'm sure I could send this to an expert for repair but thats not what its about for me. Doing this for the kicks ;) I've got a 12watt iron that I use with a small tip so I think I can handle it when I get the right part. I have a illuminated magnifing lamp that I use for small stuff but I'm going to need something better for this very small stuff. What do you use for this small work? I'm thinking about maybe one of those hands free head band magnifiers. Reccomendations? Good luck and I will post more pics of my project if I can.

Yep, head magnifier and I've got a 30W iron although I know 15W is recommended. Anyway I've just fixed it and it's booting fine, covered it in hot glue so it can't move. Not the easiest thing in the world to do, but I'm pleased as I've only been soldering myself for 2 months! :D

Good luck, let us know how you get on!

Thats GREAT man! What resistor did you finally settle on? Any chance of a pic?. Thanks

I will track down a resistor later tonight and try to repair it in the next day or so. Right now my priority is to make sure the machine will still work. I have the Qsb soldered in and the two wires underneath soldered and nothing else. I have not tampered with the nand in any way. If I repair the resistor and assemble the unit will it still boot with all that stuff soldered in place but not connected to anything? Thats assuming my repair is successful:D

Radio shack has this http://www.radioshack.com/search/index.jsp?kwCatId=&kw=33 ohm&origkw=33+ohm&sr=1 Yay or Nay?

oh christ i`ve done this 3 times now ..lol . Trying to put the smd`s back is a nightmare . I`m currently trying to source a 0010 because i knocked the trace from the same point all the way back almost to the hana , thankfully i`ve got just enought left to solder too and managed to get a smd to stick to it . now i`ve just got to trace the damn short i`ve created somewhere ..lol

tricky little fecker this RGH ..lol

At what point do you guys think you should stop?

When you first damage the resistor/pad?

or

When you damage the trace?

or

When you've stripped it right back so there's nothing left to solder to?

I hope you're aware there are people on these forums who could resolve for you in 5 mins and potentially save you from throwing a perfectly good console away.

Just something to consider - there are times when a voice in your head should speak up and say "this is too much for me to fix". Listen to it.

hahah ..these are all boards i`ve had lying around for months that already had issues , i`ve done 13 rgh`s now with no probs but we all make mistakes . stripping the trace back to the hana was a slight exageration .lol . i knocked the pad off and moved to the next one . You dont learn if you dont try and i`m in a position where i have a LOT of old boards to practice on . This one has gone from completely dead a living console that couln`t read the nand cos the southbridge was screwed to having a cygnos in and running , started the rgh , slipped with the iron and knocked the resistor off. Just in the process of finding why it`s now 0010 since i replaced the resistor . i think it`s short somewhere i`ll find it . It`s not rocket science ..lol .

I hear you Martin but its not life or death for me, its a hobby. I'm trying to learn something new here. Anyway if I get it fixed I'll try and post some pics so some other poor slob like myself can learn HaHa...and yah if it does come to me shipping it out to get fixed I'll be giving someone some business ;)

I have ordered these resistors http://www.talonix.com/shop/item.aspx?itemid=9029 and will try to repair my slim later in the week. Right now I have the QSB soldered in and all the points check out for continuity.

Just for kicks I tried to boot the mobo which is completely out of the case with the dvd drive attached. I got the power on beep but the fan did not come on or anything (as expected...missing resistor). My question is if i do repair the resistor across from the STBY-CLK point successfully will the slim boot with the QSB attached normally? I have not altered the nand in any way. Just want to make sure all is well before I go further.

If you repair the resistor then it should boot normally.

Your symptoms are a classic sign of that trace or resistor being damaged.

You can also repair the trace by replacing the resistor and soldering from the left hand side of it to FT3N2 on the underside of the MB..

Thanks psykix for the help! I really appreciate it. I saw the post about the alternative point FT3N2. Actually that is the point that I checked for continuity between it and STBY_CLK. I assumed if I got beep my soldering was good on that point. While I got ya here the pads for the resistor appear to be intact(will check later with a loupe). I will attempt to solder the new resistor to the pads. Does it matter how short or long I trim the leads of the resistor. Just want to make sure its secure.
