when install linux, is there a way that i can run linux as an application instead of when i turn on my xbox, it boots directly to linux. i would only use linux once in a while, so i dont want to boot to it all the time.
also which linux should i use, Xebian or GentooX?

heh, ill make its simple, u need to research it further. Install linux under ur regular bios, then just link to the xbe from evox OR install the linux loader on one bank, and ur other bios on the other.........

this is a xecuter forums so you should try the x-s forums and the *nix section there. though i will give some advice. I enjoy using gentoox under xfce though (not the popular and slow kde).

The setup is pretty straight forward and comes with good instruction and you MUST read everything otherwise you could really screw your hdd over picking the wrong install type.

Im sure both xabian and gentoox support usb keyboard/mouse so make your own adapter or get the free one from ms (i ordered two and cost me aroun $7 dollars total though i forget exactly). And setting up a vnc veiwer on your pc to access your xbox is always fun.

Flashing the 256k bios onto a bank of the x3 is easy as hell so i just did that and works fine. they also have an irc channel/server. #gentoox on irc.shallax.com. If you have any technicle problems try there only AFTER you read all the instal tuts to make sure you didnt do something stupid.

I have a ms25 drive that I believe is bricked or broken as the xbox gives me a red light and an error code related to a disc drive error.
I have a working hitachi version 79 that I want to know if I can use to replace the samsung. All I have is the hacked firmware from the samsung saved. Both the ixtreme 1.61 and LT 1.0 versions off the broken Samsung.

If possible, what should I do?

Open your ms25 firmware in jungleflasher as the source firmware. It doesnt matter if its original or previously hacked. Get hitachi lt+ 1.1 and load it as the target firmware and click the auto spoof button. Then you can save the new firmware file or just write it to the hitachi drive. Click the outro button and unplug the drive.
