Lite On 0225 means no mod? Or PCB change? Or just tools?

I've been reading the newb stuff to try to understand all this. I'm still confused. I have a Phat model with Lite On drive. I may be confused here. Microsoft has updated all Lite On's with FW 0225. (is this true?) I assume they sent this as a system update. Now with 0225 FW, all Lite On's are write protected? So I can't mod my system to play legal backups of games I own?

Or must I buy an unlocked pcb and swap it on the DVD? If so, what happens when the next system update comes? Will it lock the drive again?

I'm willing to spend the money on the probe and XUSB360, and whatever else I need, but I really want to understand about this unwriteable DVD situation.

0225 is a slim drive. Phat drives were updated to 02510 and are not write protected, this only applies to slim drives.
You'll be fine with the probe and x360usb

No. Those drives can be replaced with an unlocked pcb or use the kamikaze or unlock switch hack

OK, I disassembled my console. Lite On drive says:
DG-16D2S-09C
Manufactured March 2010
HW ver. A0A2
FW ver. 93450C (which as I understand is now 02510)

Read through the JF tutorial.

Team Xecuter says I need:
CK3 Pro (or lite) to power the drive
X360USB Pro (or VIA card)
CK3 Probe 3 to dump key.

I guess I'm buyin' 3 items.

Instead of the ck3pro/lite just get a molex psu for power if you want to save a couple bucks
