Yeah that sounds pretty plausible ;)

Ah well, we'll see if the solders stays intact or not :)

And for those who are STILL wondering if the fibreglass scratch pen is necessary - YES IT IS.
It does wonder :D

ok so you will be attempting to flash the liteon 74850. all you need to do is probe the r707 hole on the drive and follow the tutorial. i assume the ribbon you are referring to is the laser ribbon? its recommended to remove this as its widely thought that leaving this connected whilst flashing the liteon can lead to the open tray error. if im mistaken then let me know and ill help you out some more.

i have a question when you first sucessfully flash your lite-on 74850c by using the blaster + probe and when you put everything together and want to flash to 0800 fw to rip games.... do you have to take apart the xbox to dis connect the laser ribbon everytime you want to upgrade ?

that would totally defeat the purpose of having the blaster. the laser ribbon theory is just that ... A THEORY.
ive flashed about 100 liteon drives and never had any issue with the laser and ive never bothered to unplug cause i personally think its a myth.

My mate got all his stuff yesterday and attempted his first key extraction, but somehow he said that smoke/spark came from the black chip near the 07 point.

When he put it back together it had rrod, and he didn't even get the key!

So is his pcb dead? or is there some fix you can do with that chip?

Cheers.

Yeah you have to send it to a professional. Theres nothing you or your friend can do unfortunatley. As your in the uk, send it to TeaJunkie or Flashing360. They'll sort it out.
Either send them a PM or use the request a service at the bottom of the home page.

Although its never been proven that leaving the laser ribbon in causes the laser to possibly burn out, its still thought to be good practice and its better to be safe than sorry.
Personally I remove them but there's loads of guys that never do.
It's up to you, but for 10th seconds work, I'd say its worth removing it.
