GENERAL LITEON DG-16D5S - Trouble when trying to Extract/Backup/Copy certain discs with FSD

Hello,

I recently installed my TX Replacement PCB for my original DG-16D5S drive that came with the console. It was all purchased brand new and before getting the console RGH'd, the only original game I tried in it was kinect adventures (it was included). It worked perfectly fine.

Now, just over the past few days I have been trying to extract/copy some of my older backup games that I keep at my home away from home (originals are at home with my other 360) and they have been failing left and right when I use either FSD3's built in extract tool or the Copy DVD function in Xexmenu 1.1.

Some discs just work fine, and others don't back up for more than a few seconds before FSD or XeXmenu error out. They don't exactly display an error. In the case of Xexmenu, it will just stop copying and go back to the folder I was copying it into. In the case of FSD, the status bars fill up with green suddenly and it will say how many files it ended up copying (4/51 Files copied, for example), and the "press B to go back" indicator will show up at the bottom left of the status window.

Here's the weird part.. I can still play these games perfectly fine from the disc in this same console. None of them have a single visible scratch, I assure you. And the fact that I can just play them fine from disc is weird to me.

I did see some info about adjusting the laser pot. on the DG-16D4S, but couldn't find any threads where people said this was necessary for the DG-16D5S. It's just strange that this console would need that when it is in fact a fresh out of the box system with the original dvd drive.

The media is all Verbatim DVD+R DL.

Should I attempt to adjust the pot on this drive or try something else?

I did find this guide: http://team-xecuter.com/forums/show...-Tweak-Xbox-360-DVD-Laser?highlight=pot tweak
Found this thread in one of my searches too: http://team-xecuter.com/forums/show...VD-pot-calibration?highlight=laser+adjustment

Thanks in advance for any ideas/help!

I would do no more than trying your originals first and foremost. There was no point in you starting a thread until this had been carried out as it's the most obvious solution.

No point in bringing it up?

Then what was the point in me purchasing and installing the replacement PCB? To play my backups of course.

I know what you are trying to say, but i couldn't find any similar issues with the dg-16d5s. My originals are far far away and i wont have access to them for another month or two. I have two systems and have always made a backup of the games i buy to share between them.

The only original game i have here with me is kinect adventures and it backs up fine.

As i said above, there are only a few backup games that have an interrupted copy process when i attempt to extract the DVD using fsd3 or or xexmenu. If your DVD drive is reading the game and allowing you to play it from disc, then wouldn't you be slightly concerned if it got 5 seconds or 5 minutes into a DVD extract process and failed?

I'm just a little concerned about my DVD drive, that's all. If it keeps doing this, then i have wasted $70 on a replacement PCB and whatever i played for the x360usbpro2. I bought it so i could keep buying games and sharing them between the systems when i am either here or home.

Tx pcb isnt meant to copy backups. Do your backup games play fine and just have a problem when trying to copy them?
and how old are these backups (any from the dinosaur era [truncate])?

OK, I can understand that now. I just don't have much of a background with what these drive pcbs can and cant do. I've always played from disc before. The last Xbox i had here at this home was a phat and all i did was flash the original drive fw with Lt 2.. Yes it was a long time ago.

However, not all these games that are failing are old. Am i allowed to post title names? If its necessary i will but several are from the past 2 years.

Martin, I'd like to try the original media like you said now that i understand that the replacement PCBs aren't designed to extract a backup but i cant get to it for another month.

If worse comes to worse i could always just run the few games that aren't working from disc.

The question still remains though.. could a pot. adjustment be necessary on a dg-16d5s?

Let me clarify. Using a Tx pcb will not cause you to loose the functionality of installing games. The best way to install a game is from an original disk, not a backup copy. I said that to say the Tx pcb has nothing to do with you not being able to install from a backup. If your originals install correctly then obviously there is a problem with your backups.

Understood.

I've used FSD and xexmenu to successfully extract the contents of about 12 of my backup discs so far so i realize it can work. It seems like the trouble discs could be used as coasters until i can try backing up the originals again and re-burning them to new discs. That way i could see if the backup/burn process was the problem area.

Obviously i am just going to extract the disc contents from the originals this time around but it would still be nice to report back after i try burning the failed ones again for verification if anyone else runs into this issue.

I may get bored and give the pot adjustment a go in the next week or two as well.

Thanks for your help

Oh. One more thing i forgot to mention.. While i can't extract the contents of a few discs in xexmenu or FSD, i am able to use the dashboard and successfully "install game to hard drive"

I know this way doesn't give me the files i want (just the title folder full of files in the part 3 content directory) but it completes the copy on discs where xexmenu and fsd fail.

Dont due a pot tweak. I believe you can just install the game to hard drive since that works and play it without the disk since your system is rgh. And if you use fsd you just have to point it to the correct path so those games will be seen is fsd. Problem solved. However since you are supposed to own your originals of backups you will always be told to just use the originals but I understand your situation.

That's completely false - the containers are perfectly valid to use with FSD. I've no idea who has told you that. In fact, what you're suggesting is the best way to extract your games.

The reason why I said to do no more without your originals was twofold:

1. It eliminates the quality of the disc you used (and indeed the quality of the burn).
2. If you don't have your original discs in your possession, it basically amounts to piracy.

Martin, thanks for clarifying.

Since the containers will work, I will do it this way.

I do in fact have the discs in my possession.. they are just with my other possessions.. thousands of miles away. I own two xbox 360's; one of them at each of my homes and can't justify purchasing the games twice.. which is why I have always done a FW hack to my secondary xbox and made a backup of my original games on my PC with an 0800 drive. The other one at my other house is all original.

This is one of those borderline situations.. I'm sorry if it bends the rules on here.. you may delete or ask me to edit my posts if so. I do not promote piracy and always support the game developers but with the 28 or 29 games I have purchased over the past 7 years, I didn't want to purchase them twice.
