no you don't. the only reason that you will need to lock your hdd is to boot to the m$ dash and play on xbox live.

help if i killed my drive

i was wondering if i bricked my lighton drive new series if there is any way to fix it. is there any other possible way to replace the drive or anything i can do to fix the xbox other that buying a new one if i dont have the keys. please help

send the drive to someone who can desolder the flash chip from the drive and dump it for you

this guy will do it for 50 bucks and from his emails, didn't seem to be a very good person to deal with (he didn't like answering knowledgeable questions)

If you managed to retrieve the firmware before you "bricked" it, then its salvagable.

Without the dvd key, you're screwed.
