Looking for Advice

I've been browsing the forums from here to XS looking for more and more information on my situation. About 2weeks ago I got into doing this firmware modification to my 360. I ordered the correct SATA cable, a Kreon driver, and even a new DVD dual layer compatable burner(mainly due to the fact I needed new burner anyhow).

According the guide I have read through your site "Hacking xbox360 for Dummies" it showed what I was going to need to do this and I proceeded to order it. I got back tracked and just now began to start the process, have taken 360 apart and such and am ready to begin.

Now I'm looking for more advice because more and more I read I find people having difficult problems with flashing and such on the drive I have which is a Hitachi 0046DH. It seems Hitiachi in general are a pain. I also am seeing many people swapping the Hitiachi drives for different brands. Through the tutorials I have read this seems like a easy task but Im already running into noob problems. Mainly due to the fact im not exactly amazing at working with the PC components. My first problem that has arrised already was I could not get SLAX to work with 2.0 or 2.1, I found a thread on the forum saying try the SLAX live version. Did so and I had the problem where it ran all the way to login screen but no ModeB or spinning disc message. Try to run PC first and power 360 after SLAX logo, nothing working that way either.

Now after more research on this forum I found out it might be my chipset for SATA connection? Seems that it might not be detecting my 360 with my motherboard I assume. My SATA is connected through the motherboard and I assumed plugging it in there it should work / detect it. So after the research it seems I need to order a SATA controller card to get this in ModeB the correct way and continue to flash. I was looking into...VIA VT6421L (link).

Before I begin ordering more I need to know if I should be proceeding or not rather than wasting money. Also advice as to should I bother doing this with a Hitachi drive since they seem to be a pain in the a$$. I'm not worried about experiencing problems but I just want verification on if im doing everything correct right now. I still cant get slax2.0 or 2.1 working it seems only live version, and it doesn't get drive in ModeB because my pc isnt detecting driver via SATA connection. (Assuming this might also be why 2.0 and 2.1 wont run through the process)

please any advice is welcome but I'd like to know if I should continue or just stop getting my hopes up. I really dont have the money to blow up or ruin my 360 nor do I want to really risk it. Anyhow sorry for long post any help with what to do with SATA configuration because im still confused as to why I need a certain way to connect it rather than just plugining it into my motherboard sata connection.

What type of motherboard/chipset do you have? You can get a 6421A card which is a bit cheaper, I've seen it around for less than $15.

according to what a utility says..
Motherboard Name: Intel Corporation D102GGC2
Motherboard Chipset: ATI RS400/RC400/RC410

Hope thats correct info. I have 2 other custom built PCs I could try working off of but I figured one that was built by a company was easyier since all the compenents in it are all designed proper. (although this PC was the cheapest of them all) lol

Edit:
Also does it seem I'm correct about being the reason why I can't get360 in ModeB? I was assuming it had to be due to SATA chipset isnt correct for this. Is that what it seems to be the case or is it me doing something wrong to prevent it from working?

perhaps you should check your bios, if the sata/ide settings are set to NON-RAID.

hitachi's really aren't that hard.. they're hard to brick and if someone did break his hitachi drive, he's king at breaking stuff lol

your chipset. it wouldn't be the chipset of my choice, and if i were you i'd get that pci card. but you can give it a try... bad flashes are always easily restored on a hitachi

In my opinion is if your not that confident just buy the 6421 card and go from there, and as Jelle stated the Hitachi's are harder to brick, I tried and failed several times to flash my 0078fk, and after failing and having a mini heart attack thinking I had bricked it, it was still working fine. I bought the 6421 card and it flashed first time.

thanks for the replies, I think I'll keep trying to flash it with what I have since it seems they are difficult to break. If I get more trouble try to do it I guess its best I order the card but thanks a ton for the info. I'll update this I guess once I finish it or run into more troubles.

mini update, problem right now or has been with my SATA driver/ports. So right now im just fixing that and im sure it will work. Basically the SATA ports are not even detecting the 360 connected to it. Worst case senerio I will order new one. Wsh me luck. Been hella busy so Im just getting time to work with it more. Anyhow thanks a ton for the extra responces I'm going to make sure to keep in mind about when powering the 360, seen many people have ran into the problem so thanks for saving me from pulling hair out lol.
