if you're going to be doing a wire install then you're all set with the solder already in there

simply heat up the solder and put the correct wire in

I would do the wire install. Removing the solder is much more difficult, takes longer, and you run the risk of damaging the motherboard.

Don't use a solder sucker. It will wreck the LPC holes. Go to Radio Shack, and get some solder braid if you really want to remove the solder. Why do you insist on not doing a wire install? It takes two mintes with the holes already filled.

If you use either the briad or the sucker be sure to research it first!! de-soldering is where alot of your solder splashes and broken traces come from... I think I'm the 8th person suggesting the wire install. It's easier than the PCB on a 1.0!!

Too much to go wrong with heating up solder and inserting a wire? I fail to see how there is less to go wrong when you are heating up the same solder, removing that solder and then putting new solder into the holes. The heat is being applied a lot longer that way, and the longer the heat is applied, the better chance there is to wreck a trace. But, each to his own I guess. Good luck.

We're telling you... way too much can go wrong with removing solder!!

But if you want to do the pin header you have to desolder the holes... because that's where the pinheader goes.

With the wires your doing the same amount of soldering... you just don't have to desolder.

uhm
if its stock and has solder in them holes you almost certainly have a version 1 xbox
I reccomend a wire install every time, but if you HAVE to remove that solder
use braid and FLUX lots of it run the braid thru the flux and hold it on the point you want to clean up, it will help draw the solder up into the braid quickly and minimize the heat on the mobo.
but then why would you? I mean really a wire install is dirt simple, hit the point with a solder iron, just kind of hit the edge of ring there and dip the wire rite in takes 15 seconds and you are done compeltely

i suggest you take the advice your getting, do the wire install, its less time, less things to mess up on, its cheaper as you don't need to purchase braid to de-solder anything, and makes more sense since its half way there with the solder in the holes

Ok Guys,

I have a friend that wants me to modd his XBOX after I have successfully done mine. I have a Version 1.5 with Xapter solderless install with X3Ce. I have been searching the forum for questions that I have and now I have a few questions that I have found.

Here is a picture below to help me illustrate my question.

I just finished taking apart my friends XBOX to find out the version he owns and its a 1.0 with solderfilled LPC holes. After everyone saying to do the wire install this is the approach I want to take and the questions I have about it.

1. Is it possible to solder the D0 Point from the top. Do not wish to remove the motherboard from the case. All the tutorials and pictures I have seen show D0 connected and soldered from the bottom.

2. Since I'm going to be using the (#10 Wire install Adapter) below to connect the LPC to the X3 do I need the (#9 PinHeader)

3. With my install the X3 mounted directly on top of the Xapter. Since I'm doing a wired install where do I mount the X3 on his? How do I secure it so th X3 does not move around?

4. Pretty damn nervous  about this any advice, words of wisdom or a tutorial that is specific to the steps I need to go through would really be apprecated. I have only done one of these and I'm very much a newbie.

Thanks Guys

Lee David

Alright, I think you have your wires crossed here... Let's try and straighten them out...

If you are doing a wire install you pretty much should take out the MOBO... it's way easier to work on that way. It is also a way easier sodler point at the bottom of the board... but that is also your preference... If I were you I'd do the bottom.

Nope #10 is the same thing as #9 but with wires hanging off of it.

#6 is a sticky pad for the X3... just stick it to the side of your xbox. Your wires will be soldered on the bottom of the MOBO and stick out the side... you then run them over to the top of the board... find a good spot for your chip and stick it there.

Be aware that you have to hook up #3, #7 and #4 to your chip... so don't put it to far away from these point. A good rule of thumb is to completely connect your chip... and then mount it.

If you check out the two links in my sig they point to a X3 install on a 1.6. It's not excatly what you're doing but it goes through how to solder and has some good pics on what your solder should look like. The second link talkes about how to check your pins for the correct voltage... and how to use a multimeter. It also shows how to desolder... so if you decide to go that route your covered.

There is also a sticky that Martin C made that has a great tut on soldering... watch the video's.

Lastly get some desoldering braid even if you do the wire install. That way if you need to remove any solder or make a solder splash it's a very quick and easy fix.

Most people screw up when they make a solder splash and try to clean it up with the iron... the iron's not made to do that and it's an easy way to kill your board. Desoldering braid is 3 bucks... well worth the price!!

Good Luck!!
