I did a wire install the end of last week on a 1.0 Xbox. Due to how the optical drive sits (actually pushing the harness down) I wasn't getting a good connection and the box wouldn't boot.
So I bought a Vacuum Desoldering Tool (I tried desoldering braid with no luck, sorry) and sucked the solder out. Proved to be a little more difficult that I had anticipated because the solder seems pretty contect on staying in there. :/ Wish I had someone holding the board for me, but I had to prop the mobo up so I could apply heat from one side and suck from the other.
Anyway, to make a long story short, after cleaning the holes out and soldering in the pin header, that baby fired right up the first time. Good to know I'm not a complete doofus.
Hope this helps.
