Here's what everyone has to tell ppl all the time, so noob guides get pointed to.

Holding power then slightly after pressing eject and holding them together gets to the backup. (X on DIP controller turns purple. (Red and Blue LEDs)

Once the FlashBios screen COMES UP you can choose which banks to flash to on the DIP switch, THEN choose the flash option you want. (Http, HD, or disc)
On On Off Off Off is Bank1, and Off On Off Off Off is Bank2.

I have a 1.6 and I could NOT get my chip to successfully flash the X3 bios, SOMETIMES it would boot to a dash, but NEVER get the X3CL, until I tried something.

I realized that the pinheader pins were so high that it looked like the pins could actually TOUCH the bottom of the socket on the X3 chip. Figuring a possible shortage, I decided to pull the chip up slightly. When I did that I was able to get a little bit working, but pulling it up a LITTLE more and making sure I levelled it ALL of the coming flashes have been successful and get me X3CL.

Not that this is anyone else's case, but it beat out the blindly resolder method, and apparently worked!
NOTE: By pulling up the chip I mean right now mine sits like 1/16th of an inch from being fulling mated pinheader to socket.

ps, I COULD only get the M8 working on mine before JUST as you claim.
