Manufacturer for code FF not found on new OOB Slim Demon

Hi all,

I've just opened up a brand new Slim Demon bought from ck3.co.uk over the Christmas period. Connected it to my PC to test as instructed in the Demon support forums. It connects to J-Runner and Demon Toolbox fine and I was able to update the firmware (tried this to see if it fixed the problem) to 1.04 with no issues.

When trying to read or write to the Nand in either program I get the Manufacturer for code FF not found error.

I've double checked the switch is set to PC mode on the Demon and I've tried two different micro USB cables (and two PC's just in case), I've also tried with the breakout board connected via the supplied ribbon cable with the same result. The breakout board has a blue LED that turns on when the USB cable is plugged in and both PC's and programs see the Demon fine they just get the error message when trying to read or write to the Nand.

I've searched the forums (and google) for this error and everything I've read seems to point to a soldering issue however there has been no soldering done to this board as it's brand new out of the box.

Before I send the board back as faulty I want to see if there's something I'm missing or something stupid I'm doing ;)

Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

The unit does not arrive with a nand on the flash already (someone correct me if I'm wrong there). So you'll have to dump one first then try writing that to the demon.

I may have jumped to the wrong conclusion with my first response, sorry for that.

If the flash is empty (which you are correct it is when it arrives) then it should say "wrong header" not the error you're getting. I would agree something is not right with the demon.

OP - you do have the correct drivers installed? (I assume so since you said you were able to update firmware)

I installed the drivers from the first post in this thread: http://team-xecuter.com/forums/show...-Ultimate-JTAG-RGH-App-*LATEST-DOWNLOAD-HERE* so I assume so. The Demon shows up correctly on both PC's and is recognised by J-Runner and the Demon Toolbox so I don't think it's driver related (could be wrong though...)

I don't have a valid Nand at the moment as I haven't even opened up the Xbox yet I was just testing the Demon before doing so, I was trying to write a clean donor Nand I found as a test, though I was also getting the FF error when trying to read the Demon Nand which I believe it shouldn't do even if it's blank.

Hmmm.

Looks like I won't be sending it back as even though ck3.co.uk ships from the UK all returns have to be sent to the U.S. which means it will cost more to return it than it will to just order a new one...

Guess I'll just have to hope somebody else chimes in on this with a possible fix that doesn't involve sending it back :(

I really hope it's something I'm not doing or a misconfiguration somewhere.

Hi m8,

If you cover the postage I will check it out for you just as a sanity check to make sure if it is faulty.

Hi m8,

Thanks I'll probably take you up on that offer if I can't get it sorted in the next few days :)

I'm gonna try one more cable (the two I've been using are a bit long as they're off my tablet and e-reader) and I'm currently re-installing a laptop I've repaired for a friend so I'll try it on that tomorrow as it'll be a fresh system so less chance of any software conflicts.

I'll get the loupe out tomorrow as well and just give it a closer look in the daylight (crappy cfl bulbs...) just to make sure nothings missing or damaged.

IF nobody else chimes in with a possible fix (or to berate me for doing something stupid heh) is it ok if I PM you to get the details?

Well this is just weird.

Tried a shorter cable on my laptop: same problem.

Shorter cable on my PC: same problem.

Thought just for sh**s and giggles lets try it on my Parallels Windows 7 install on my Mac and what do you know J-Runner can now read the Nand...

Call me confused heh, now all I need to do is find a Nand image to test the write as apparently the one I thought I could use throws up an error about being the wrong size and won't load.

This is why I love this sort of thing heh, it's never easy and is what keeps people like me and probably a lot of you guys in a job :)

Edit: Actually thinking about it I wonder if it's because all of the USB ports on my laptop and PC are USB 3.0 whereas the Parallels install only uses USB 2.0

Looks like I spoke too soon.

I managed to write the nanddump kindly supplied by jerky333 while connected to Parallels but now I can't read or write again to the Nand I keep getting the Manufacturer for code FF not found again.

I tried to read the Nand after writing the image to check it wrote correctly and that's when I'm getting the original error again. I've tried refreshing the firmware upgrade to 1.04 again just in case but that didn't make any difference.

I don't suppose anybody has a link to one of the older firmware revisions for the Demon just to test with?

It sounds like you may be running into something that I ran into but never got resolved, I was getting an error with the driver. I ended trying my laptop and didn't have the problem, and have just determined that my PC has had to much crap loaded onto it.

I've tried 2 versions of the driver (not sure if they're different or not) the one installed by the Demon Toolbox and the one linked to in the J-Runner download thread.

Parallels only has the driver installed by the toolbox so I'll look at the version number and then see if the one from the J-Runner thread is different and if it will let me upgrade it.
