many items on my home screen are darkened and cannot be accessed

hello. im new to all this stuff and i know this is a noob section so going to just be myself and ask this stupid question... why are all of these blanked out... parental is shut off and have reformatted both internal and removable hard drives but cant access some menu options like account profile privacy and kinect
. i dont want to update my dash until i have successfully modded because if i understand correctly its easier to mod if in older firmware... no idea what to do ... could use a little direction as to what i should do to get the most from my new xbox360

Sounds like parental controls have been put on by the previous owner.

Ether contact him/her or try guessing...usually x,x,x,x or y,y,y,y or y,x,a,b
