I've never had any trouble locking Maxtor harddisks (or Seagates). I use EvoX dash to lock/unlock. There are however other programs that'll do the same.

I never had a problem either.

But... from 6/10 GB to 20? You're still only going to get like 4-5 games on a 20 GB... come on, spring for a 250, can get them for $60 nowadays :)

where can one find a 250gb for $60? I am in the process of modding my kids' xbox and I am in need of another 250gb hhd.

Yes you can get a 160Gb for in the $60's but you get what you pay for (5400rpm 2Mb buffer) Generic. Not sure if it would even work in a box.
The best price shopping you can do for computer parts is on:
http://www.pricewatch.com/
Also check out this link http://xboxdrives.x-pec.com/
It has a compatiblity chart of hard drives that are known to work in a Xbox. Keep in mind that not all compatible drives are on the list. ( I have a Maxtor thats not on the chart but does lock)
Lastly, some free advise: If your going to upgrade Hdd's, bust out the wallet and do yourself a favor and get at least a 100Gb. You will save money in the long run.
Hope this helps

Personally, I'd like to find some 40 gig HD's for my "visitor xbox's". I have a 160 in one, and it holds more than I play, by far. If I could find 2 cheap 40's that could hold some of the sweet multiplayer games that we consistantly use, I'd be happy.

On that note, what is important in finding a quality xbox drive? 7200rpm? I'd assume Cache doesn't matter. ATA speed matter? The xbox is limited at the Motherboard I think.

Before I got my 160, I was playing around and put an older 20 Gig in.
• Series DiamondMax Plus 6800
• Model Maxtor 92049U6
• Manufacturer Maxtor
• Capacity 20.5GB
• Interface IDE ATA/66
• Buffer Size 2048KB
• RPM 7200
• Average Seek Time 9Ms
• Average Latency 4Ms
• Reading Transfer Rate 22MB/s

It ran painfully slow! I took it out promptly.
