I was soldering an 80mm blue cathose for my jewel to the 12v and ground for the HD on the metal rings that hold the wires to the PSU. Out of nowhere the X3 turns on by itself, disabled. I'm like, okaaaay...(BTW You can kick me for doing this with everything plugged in) I turn the box on and it behaves VERY strangely. The bios I think actually boots because it frags since the hd and dvd rom drive are not plugged in. and when I boot from the X3 the fan speed is higher. There is no video. When I turn the box off, the leds in my controller ports turn off immediately, but the fan takes like, 3 seconds to turn off.

Is the problem the PSU do you think? Sorry for the noob style post but I'm in a hurry. Thanks.

er did you unplug the xbox from the mains while you were soldering? Soldering with the mains plugged in is a very bad idea.

Yeah you probably fried something, I won't pretend to have any decent sorta knowledge about the xbox hardware, but I assume that it sits in a standby mode while the power is off as the power button on the front panel doesn't switch the mains supply off and on to the power supply, but rather takes the xbox in and out of it's standby mode (I'm quite happy to be corrected on this if I'm talking bollicks :)

.......my point being that parts of the power supply are still live when the mains is still connected, and your soldering iron is earthed, so if you solder something with power still on it it's gonna shorted to earth/ground.

if your xbox is turning on, that probably means your PSU is fine, I would look into a new motherboard if I were you or even better yet, get a used xbox from some place cheap or off ebay or something and just replace the mobo from the used box with your box, that way you will always have spare parts from that used xbox if you need to fix something else. Xbox mobo's are like $80 and used xboxes are $110 or so and you get a dvd drive, hard drive, power supply, and a case.

well, i wouldn't give up yet, closely look at your mobo and make sure there are no solder splashes or anything like that. You can always sell your xbox on ebay as "broken" and then buy a used xbox from somewhere.

I'm sure. In the middle of me soldering it just started doing it. I was touching the positives, and ... can I hook up a normal ATX power supply to it and see if it's the mobo (getting desperate).

no, the wires carry different voltages. The different colors on the wire usually indicate what voltage the wire is, but there are still other variables, like some of the wires always have power going through them even when the xbox is off. I installed a key in the back of my xbox that, when off, cuts power to the purple/brown wire, which is what the xbox uses to start up.

What the hell is that supposed to mean?

Anyway, I'll take some pictures and show you. One of the coupled yellow 12v wires' skin has been burned away but the wire is completely intact. Be Back in a few.

haha just a joke cuz you were sayin your parents were guna kill you and all but i'm sure maybe if we can see what you've done visually, we can see and tell you what may have caused the problem exactly..

I get some safe mode restriction error when uploading the pictures.
I get that when I try to add my avatar. Anyhow, I could only see the 2 pics of your powersupply (the 2 top ones) the others didnt work. Your powersupply looks fine. I need some pics of your mobo though, preferably near the area you were soldering.

Hey Shibz, you're back :)

Computertrendy, if you've got a multimeter you could check the different power supply lines from the PSU (be very careful around the live mains end though), it may be that one of them is low or dead.
