i ordered all my parts from xconsoles... and in this last patch, I was missing the ground wire for the slim... there was a very short ground wire for phat... but it will not do, due to its length... Will using the blue wire from the phat wires work as well? or will their difference in gauges cause me problems?

You'd be better off soldering the black and red wire from the phat and wrapping the connection with some electrical tape.

hmm i considered this... does anyone know the gauge size? maybe I can just pick some up at radio shack or lowes...

Its just a ground wire - Take the thickest from the fat version and be done.

deviate a little - go to a closer ground spot - or yes any thick guage wire would work

You could use one of the other phat wires and double or triple up. Trim one of the long wires to length 3 times then solder all three to the CR and to the GND point. Thus you in effect make the wire a larger gauge and don't have to go buy anything or patch together the two thick wires :)

In my opinion it doesnt really matter just use the blue wire and finalize with sum hot glue. or find a close ground point their are plenty on the bored. Any of the above suggestions will also work

ive looked into the alternate solder point posts and have seen nothing about alternate gnd points... sadly i cannot recognize them myself on a pcb... I think i will solder together the phat 3v3 and gnd to get a decent length slim gnd cable... thank you all!

does it actually matter where on the metal portion i solder the ground?

Use a multimeter. Put one end on a known ground, probe random things until you get continuity. Ta da, you found another ground :p

Obviously using a microscopic ground is a bad idea. Probe larger points (such as those of the missing pin headers)

dude.. its a ground, grab any wire and solder it to anything that is metal pretty much exept for cicuitry. and gauge dosent matter, nither does lenght. its a ground wire.....

If you get it at rat shack check the wire before you buy. They carry alot of sizes but most of them are solid core and that just wont due!
Why wont solid core do? I used solid core on my xbox when wiring extra fans... no problem

dude.. thats not what everyone else has been saying... have a source for why ground wires gauges are insignificant?

Why not just use the red cable from the phat wiring for the GND?

Look at the install pics as to where to solder it. I use the top of the AV socket for instance.

thanks for the replies.

however the red wire is about a cm or two short so that would not do... and I knew that was the usual place to solder the ground but was asking if there happened to be a closer alternative rather than going all the way out to the case(or av cover)... seems I will be soldering the phat red and black wire. Wish me luck I will be starting tomorrow!

My source is the fact that I am an electrician. And I know that the ground wire is completely irelevant, the only thing that can make a diference is the gauge. but the fact that we are dealing with 12 volts max here, it is completely irrelevant. all the ground does is returns the current to ground...

Besides on my install, pn the PHAT i didnt like the ground wire being so short, so I got a longer wire, similar gauge but solid core, and i used that instead, everything works perfectly my falcon boots instantly.
