Please can someone help me.... I have just replaced my motherboard in my Xbox, the last one i had was modded and attached to a HDD over 160GB of data on it. The replacement Motherboard has gone in fine although it is a V1.4 and not V1.2. The chip is soldered in and working fine. When I connect my old HDD though it will not boot. If it look in the cromwell bios It detects my maxtor HDD but then says unable to read first sector. I did not think that this would be a problem as my Mobo is chipped but for some reason it will not read the HDD. Please anyone who thinks it my be a bios error or motherboard HDD locking problem and knows how to sort it get in touch. Or anyone that has done a Motherboard replacement and used the old HDD help would be appreciated.

Thanks again a frustrated gamer

Was the hard drive locked to the old board? Do you get any error codes?

it may have been locked? I can honestly not remember. All i can say is my old board was chipped and then the board blew. All i have done is replace the board and re-chipped it. It could be that it was locked but when i disable the chip and try to boot i get nothing at all. This is doing my head in....

I have also got a back up of my old settings on my PC. The way I think i see it must be a locking problem because the lock code is generated from the motherboard to my understanding. If i have changed the Mobo then the code will not match. Please any suggestions....

I need to game

Ok, so much for the unlocking tips I wrote up...

I'd say to go with what is reputable for PC use, and probably what has a decent warranty. Many drives are down to a 1 year warranty, but some still have 3 years of coverage. Even if you lose your data you can still have your drive replaced. Search for the Xbox HDD lock database to confirm the lock ability of drives you are considering, if locking the drive for un-modified booting is a requirement.
