Hi, my mate has a 360 with an ms28 drive in it, recently it has started to scratch the discs and not read them, from what i can gather the drive is knackered and needs to be replaced, now the thing is, can i just straight swap the ms28 drive for another ms28 drive, or an ms25 drive?

cheers

You can use any replacement drive you like, as long as you flash your current drive key and version to the new drive.

How is it scratching it? Is he moving the console from a lying to a standing position? Is the disc not being lifted out of the tray when its spinning?

not entirely sure, but it makes a grinding noise as if its catching on something, the tray doesnt open and you have to tap it with your finger for it to open, and it keeps coming up with the error, please insert this disc into an xbox360.

how easy is it to get the key from the drive he has now?

Just dump the firmware from the drive and make sure it has a drive key in it. If the drive inst flashed, you will want a via chipset.

If the drive hasnt been previously flashed, you will want to use a via chipset unless you want to do some soldering on the pcb of the drive.
