MS28 orig FW dumped, cant flash

Ok, to start I have the VIA VT 6421L PCI SATA Card, I'm running Vista, and using Xtreme boot maker 52, which from what I understand is the best XBM for Vista. I was unable to make my PC boot from any USB drives I own, so I have everything that XBM creates on a HDD. I followed Text's tut for flashing the MS28 drive, and I seem to have successfully dumped my original FW. However, now I am unable to flash the drive with the hacked FW. Whenever I try the ten second trick, it just hangs at "port:bc00, Master/Slave:00". I've tried numerous amounts of time in seconds, to no avail. When I reconnect the DVD drive to the 360, I get error 65, which I understand to have something to do with the drive missing FW. I've tried reflashing the drive with the orig.bin, but it still hangs at the same place. Anybody have any suggestions? I've looked everywhere and can't seem to get an answer. I hope I've provided enough info. Thanks in advance for any answers you might have to offer.

Thank you for the replies. I am using the bad flash method, and I am using the port on the card that faces the front of the computer. I figured out which port to use early on from reading a bunch of posts before I even attempted to flash. Besides that, I seem to have been able to successfully dump the orig FW. I'm not sure if the link you posted really applies to my situation, as I am not getting multiple red lights, just one, and it seems to be because there is no FW, or there is incorrect FW on the dvd drive. Anyone else have any ideas?

Yep. I used x52a, but my PC wouldn't boot from the USB drive, so I put everything on a HDD and used a dos cd to boot into.

Did you DL the update for the Xtreme52 (outlined in Textbook's tutorial - replaces three files with new ones) and use it for your MS28?

I believe those three updated files are just for the error you are getting. Recheck his tutorial again to see (and for the DL file location).

I thought the version of XBM I have (53) didn't need those update files? I'll look into that when I get off work tonight. Thanks for the idea.

Yep, according to what I read, with XBM you don't need update.zip. Is it possible that this is happening because I am in Vista? Would I maybe have better luck with XP? BTW, something else I have tried recently is disconnecting all other drives and disabling them in the BIOS. Still no luck.

allright if you still get e65 you need to reflash your drive with the original firmware and after you do that you need to flash it again with extreme52.bin. try leaving the drives on dont dissable them see if it works. if you need any help reflashing the drive with the original ms28 firmware i'll be happy to walk you through it step by step but remember reflash the drive only if you're still getting the error 65

Thanks for the tip. Unfortunately, immediately following my failure to flash the hacked FW to my drive, I started trying to flash the orig.bin. It hangs at the exact same place. I've tried leaving the drives connected and enabled, disconnected but enabled, and everything in between. Still no luck. I must have read Text's tut 100 times just to make sure I understand everything correctly, and I'm still stuck. I really appreciate all the help, but I think I may have to send it in to have someone else do it. I've already shot textbook a PM asking him if he thinks it's fixable from his end.

no dont flash it with the orig.bin flash it with the original ms28 firmware (which is a bin file you can download from the team modfreakz website. sorry i cant post any links but you should be able to find it easily by searching on google)

anyway so after you download the ms28.bin file you need to:

open the orig.bin using "Maximus' 360 Firmware" and copy the key. now open the ms28.bin using the same program and paste the key that you got from the orig.bin and hit replace. now open up extreme bootmaker and choose the new ms28 firmware with the replaced key and prepare the usb. DO not update the sam and keycheck by the way
Now the final step.
Boot into ms dos using the usb drive and go through the samread and samhack proccess. after you're done check if this fixed the problem and let me know

Ok, I get what your saying now. I'll have to try it tomorrow. One of the problems I'm having is that I can't seem to boot off of any USB drives I have, so I've been using the dos cd suggested in textbooks tut, and the files are all on a HDD. I'm starting to think it's just my computer, but I'll give this a try anyway. Again, I appreciate all your attempts to help me. I'll let you know what I come up with tomorrow when I get a chance to work on it.

I'll give this a try. What do you think will be different about this FW vs the others? What's to stop it from just freezing again? I'm not doubting you, I just don't think I understand how this will help it from freezing, which is the main problem I'm having...

about that i don't know. you'll have to ask primitivex5 or one of the moderators but what i do know is that this procedure will fix the error 65 problem. just remember enter samread, close the 360 wait exactly 10 seconds then open it again. do the same for samhack. i'm not sure about the freezing but i'm think there's a malfunction in your drive. give this a try though and see how it goes and aslo do some rersearch. if you still have the same problems then i tihnk you'll have to send the xbox in for repair.

Yeah try ntfs4dos , usb drives didnt worked for me either.. But this should work.. and also make sure you turn on your 360 at precise 10 seconds after you select your controller

Yeah, it still hangs. I think it's my computer. I'm trying to get another PC I have setup with XP so I can put the VIA PCI card in it and hopefully get this working. Thanks for replying though.
UPDATE: So I have my card hooked up to a XP machine now, but now the card isn't recognized in DOS. Should I be using an earlier version of Xtreme Boot Maker than 5.3 if I'm running XP? I'm only using 5.3 because I couldn't even get the older one installed on my Vista machine. So it looks like I'm back to square one. I'll do some searching, as I'm sure this is a more common problem than my previous one. If anyone comes across this and wants to give me some tips, I'm all ears.
UPDATE 2: Well, I've gotten the new PC to recognize the VIA PCI card, but it still hangs in the same place. I am using different amounts of time for the ten second trick, starting with 10 seconds of course, but it still hangs in the same place every time. I think I'm about ready to give up. Damn this MS28!

try pulling the 5.2 version of xtreme bootmaker from xbins. thats the one im using. the reason why the 10 second trick is not working is because your drive is already flashed with the wrong firmware thats why you have to reflash it with the original firmware (which i gave the directions earlier how to do it) and then your xbox will be back to it's original mode. now try flashing it with the xtreme5.2 firmware and the computer should recognize the xbox drive with the 10 second trick.

ok let ask you a question. when you boot into dos and type samread xxxxxxxxx the pc recognizes the chipset but then when you close the 360 and wait ten seconds it hangs at port0 or portb right???
