MS28 wierd problem

Okay, so I lent my friend my 360 last weekend and he tried to flash it using xtreme bootmaker with xtreme 5.2a firmware. The thing is, he said he did not use the bad flash method but the drive was still read and flashed. He is using a Pci - SATA card with a VIA vt6421A chipset. He said that when he tried to use samtool, it gave him a "no valid version in backups/xxxxxxx/xxxxx/orig.bin!" message but he still flashed it anyway. Now my xbox won't play original games but it can play dvds okay. I was wondering if there is a way to save it because I tried looking at the orig.bin and it seems like an empty 256kb file.

note: since he didn't use the bad flash method at all ( he says he could never get it to work so he just didn't use it and it read) should I still be able to use the badflash method to re-read the firmware?

thank you very much for any help!

That's the thing.. I'm not even sure if I do. You see... at home.. all I have are Mac and Linux boxes so I don't have those nifty programs to check for the drive key. I tried hex editing the orig.bin that my friend got from his usb and all I see are a few thousand lines of all "ff"s. So now my xbox just thinks its a dvd player and gives me a message to put the dvd into an xbox whenever I insert an original game. Could it be that he really did flash the ms28 without using the bad flash method? Also.. what can I do now??? Would there maybe be a way to save it??

I don't know, I never used Xtreme Boot Maker (because it's not running on Vista) but I do know that there is a Checkbox that says MS28 Bad Flash so that's maybe the reason why he didn't had to use the 10sec Trick.

I would recommend to restore youre orig.bin (if the orig.bin isn't damaged or anything). Tell youre friend to use iPrep this time, maybe that works better than Xtreme Boot Maker. But than again you should ask someone that used XBM before so you defenetly know what went wrong. Anyway, I'd say restoring the original is the way to go.

PS:

As soon as the program (samread, iDump or whatever) backed up youre original, samtool disblays youre Drive Key. Maybe youre friend was smart enough to wright that one down!!.

rite firstly check that youre original.bin is 256kb ... and if it isnt do not flash back to it !!! also if it isnt you have yourself a very expensive dvd player or down $100 / £50 as this is what its going to cost to replace your drive!!!

anyways good luck !!!

okay, I found out the orig.bin is 256kb but when I open it with a hex editor, it is still all "ff"s.

I'll try to flash it back when I can go to my friend's house!
Oh yeah, one more question! should I try using the bad flash method when I reflash it? (since my friend didnt' use it and still somehow flashed it..)

thank you for all the help!

im having a similar problem i previously flashed my ms25 but it seemed that it did not work. i then tried to do the ten second bad flash method to recover the drive but that did not work. then i tried the 0800 method and it alloweed me to dump the old firmware (i saved my orig.bin file). but then when i tried flashing the drive again it gave me the port error. anyone know how to fix this?

Bah! Me and my friend tried all of yesterday to get bad flash method to work but we are having no luck. We turn off the xbox, wait for the orange light on the power supply. Then we press 1 on the menu and then we count 10 seconds and we turn it back on but nothing happens. It does not read or anything! We've tried for hours trying every single second up to 30.... Is there something we're doing wrong? Should we just pull the plug instead of using the power button? We've been following everyone's tutorial but we keep getting stuck here... :(

Any help will be greatly appreciated! thanks again!!

Which program and which cmd did u use??
Try it with 1-10sec and if that's not going to work use the 0800 disk.

PS: If you're trying to restore youre orig.bin I would recommend to rename it into hacked.bin (just make a copy of your orig. bin and name that one hacked.bin so your original firmware is still safe). Then copy it to your backup folder (x:backups/7digits/5digits).
Then boot into dos (with youre USB Stick or whatever u use) and use the iFlash 7digits 5digits command. That's how I always restored my original.
Before you flash your drive, I would use the iDump command to get your Drive key (before you rename your orig.bin into hacked.bin and copy it to your stick, boot with the stick into Dos and use the iDump command+the 10sec trick or the 0800 Disk). Wait until samtool displays your Drive Key, wright that one down, and then restore your orig.bin. That way you still have the opportunity to replace your Drive if you smoke it;).

i was able to use the 0800 disk to flash the drive again unfortunately it still wont read any games whether they be originals or backups. i think there might be something wrong with the laser i am going to try to use the rubber band trick if that doesn't work i might just have to order a new laser. Suggestions are appreciated.
