7 - kernel - HDD timeout

Make sure your hard drive is plugged in and the jumper is set right. Look for bent pins on the IDE connection on the back of the drive as well. Do you hear the drive spin up when you power it on?

The hard drive is plugged in and i have the jumper set to cable select. I've checked all the pins and they are all straight. And the hard drive spins up when powered on. I've even put in my cousins IDE cable and it still gave me error 7.

Ok this is what i came up with

Xbox HDD:
Chip on with flash bios:BootIdeReadData data not ready
Chip on with evox bios: error 7
Chip off: error 7

Windows 98 HDD:
Chip on with flash bios:Flash bios boots fine but can't read the drive(oviously):p
chip on with evox: error 7
chip off: error 7

The thing is, is when i put my cousins IDE cable and mess around with it it will boot evox dash about 1 out of every 20 or so tries. So i think it might be a problem with the IDE port or my cable, but i dont know why it would be the cable becuase it is one of those ata/166 cables and i bought it not that long ago. any ideas?

It has to be a loose connection somehwere. Check out the DVD drive connection as well as the IDE connection on the motherboard.

Ok well my brother just went out and bought an xbox, so i put my IDE cable in his xbox and it gave me error 7 so i know it is my IDE cable that i need to fix or replace.

When i put my IDE cable in either my brothers or cousins xbox it gives error 7, and when i put either my cousins or my brothers IDE cable in my xbox i get error 7. So my cable wont work in anybody else's xbox and anybody else's cable wont work in mine, so i think my IDE cable is messed up as i said before and something with my hard drive. Could i prove this theory if i went to a friends house and unlocked his hard drive then put it in my xbox to see if it works?

Ok, my friend should be coming over in a couple of days. So if i put his drive in with my IDE cable and it doesnt work but if it works with his IDE cable and his drive then that means there is something wrong with my IDE cable, right? And if my HDD doesnt work with either cable, then it means the HDD is messed up also?

Sorry for asking so much but i always like to know for sure what im doing before i do it :)

Ok well i havnt been able to go to my friends but my cousins chip came in today (I installed it on his v1.6 xbox and flashed it with X2 5035 with in 5 minutes which made me mad because i did his so easily and mine still doesnt work ). So i unlocked his drive in flashbios and i was going to put it in my xbox, but as i was putting it in my xbox my D0 wire was pulled out. So i just tried to hold it in place to see if it would even work. But right before i pushed the power button my hand sliped and then i heard a little pop and the lights when out. Now it wont turn on, but when i plug it in the lights on the switch light up (not the ones on the switch, that one still wont light up and the front switch glows lightly red. Whats going on?

So when you plug the Xbox into the wall you get lights on the modchip switch, or the eject button? What was the D0 wire touching when you turned it on? How hard were you pressing on the board?

The lights on the modchip arn't on, it's the switch lights are on.When i flip the switches all that should come on do. The eject lights glow very faintly red, its too light that i have to turn off the lights too see it. I never turned it on i was holding it on the d0 point and before i turned it on it sliped and then it pop and the lights went out. I was just applying a little bit of pressure that i thought would give it connection.

I take it you were holding the D0 on the top of the board correct? What did it end up touching? The reason I ask about pressure is because I'm wondering if you shorted something on the bottom of the board with the shielding.

I was holding it on the bottom D0. I think it was one of the points beside teh D0. And i was holding the motherboard so it didnt touch the shielding, and if i wasnt i dont even have the shielding in at all.

Ok i just remembered that i did have the shielding on while i was doing this, and i think the mobo might have been touching the shielding. The thing i dont understand is why it would short out before i even turned it on, will it normally do that? Last time i had something short out on me was with my dvd drive but i turned on the xbox before it did it (Was able to fix with a little solder and a wire :D).

As soon as you plug the Xbox into the wall there is power inside, it doesn't have to be on.
