Hey all and thanks in advance for any and all help received.

So here's the skinny on my problem:

I do general repairs on retro consoles, (NES, SNES, Atari, Intelivision ect) so I'm always buying busted systems.

One day at the swap meet this guy had, (I sh*t you not) six milk crates filled with disassembled xBox 360's. Picked them all up for $75.

So after weeks of going through every dvd drive and systematically plugging them into each motherboard to match them up and doing RRoD fixes, I pieced together 11 working xBox 360s.

Now I'm down to the last four motherboards, and four DVD drives, but none of them will work with eachother...

I can put in a DVD and it will play just fine, but when I put in an xBox game, it tries to play it like a DVD, or every now and then a message will pop up saying "You need a hard drive to play original xBox games... blah blah blah"

SOoo... To sum it up, is there any way to extract the DVD key from the motherboard? Or possibly put a 'universal' key on the drives I have to get the motherboard to use it properly?

And last question: Does JTAGing a 360 get around this problem?

Thanks again!

The DVD drive information is stored on the motherboard as well as the DVD drive itself. If the motherboard and drive keys do not match, the system allows you only to play dvd's. JTagging the console will provide the required keys that you could use to write back to the drives in order to get them operational; however, if the console is JTagged and you've obtained the keys, you might as well leave it as a JTagged system

That's pretty much the same line of thought I've been going through, just wanted to have someone else concur with the idea.

I'm assuming that a quick search of the forum will find me a tutorial on the matter.

Thanks again!

yes a quick search on here is the way to go. Look in the rgh/jtag for noobs section and martin c rgh road map for noobies is a good place to start. http://team-xecuter.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=178

Followup: After a preliminary search, it appears that only two of the systems are JTagable, as the others are FW versions 2.0.16747 & 2.0.16547 (both Falcon)

Is there possibly a guide listing what drives came with what board types? Like Hitachi drives only came on (insert system A) and (insert system B) if they were manufactured between (Insert dates here)? Out of the four drives I have, no two are the same x.X. Granted it wouldn't take long to sort it out by process of elimination. Just not sure of any negative repercussions that may unfold from using the wrong drive/board combo, if any.

with the 2 falcon xboxs u will have to rgh2 these to grab the DVD key u need. Also when u jtag or rgh the xboxs it will tell u what type of drive originally came with the xbox in osig.

Outstanding. Again, I thank you very much for your help and for not auto-flaming the noob ;D
there is no need for it. Its when noobs just don't bother searching, reading and expect to be spoonfed all the time thats annoying. If u have done your research and then don't understand anything or are having problems then we are all here to help. Simples!
