TS MS25 drive.

Im having problems updating from xtreme 4.2 to 5.2

Ive never had to upgrade from 4 before because i updated from 3.3 to 4.2 straight away.

3.3 was the first firmware i updated to so i followed textbooks guides directly, and it worked perfectly fine. Then when i updated to 4.2, i did it the exact same way, using samread then samhack. and that worked perfectly too.

Now for some reason im having problems updated to 5.2, and its got nothing to do with the enable 0800 disc. That works fine. I can see my sata thingy majig in the menu (in DOS) when i type samread xxxxxxx xxxxx. and i select it. but nothing happens. it doesnt read.

What my question is. Is when i open up the xtrem42.bin file (the firmware my 360 is currently using) in firmware toolbox, it says "report as ms28". So does this mean that my 360 drive is now an ms28? And ive got to update from 4.2 using the MS28 way?

My other question is. Is if there is an easier way to update from 4.2 to 5.2 than doing samread and samhack in dos?

Cheers.

(Sorry about the huge post)

No probs ablut the large post - contrary though to what you think, I believe that it DOES have to do with the Enable disk.

By upgrading to 4.2 from 3.x, your drive (as you suspected) now will behave like a MS28. With the 4.x and higher firmwares, the two methods to update are;
1. Use the Enable disk, which you can think of as a 'back door' to put your drive in a flashing mode like the MS25. The bahaviour you onbserved, where the selection is on the list, but it then hangs is exactly what MS28's do
2. Use the 'bad flash method' (like native MS28's) and just bypass the firmguard.

As an additional note, with an original MS25, you need to ensure that you spoof MS25, not the current MS28 which yours seems to be - otherwise you run the risk of getting the E66 error.

Hmm... It must be something to do with the enable disk then. I just thought i got it to work because if i didnt use it, my 3 options wouldnt appear, and if i did use it, they were there.

Im just gonna try the bad flash method. But it says in textbooks tutorial that it will only work with the VIA Chipset. Is this true?

As for spoofing, ive only just realised that now too. Never spoofed my 4.2, but i have done it for 5.2. I just hope i get it to work. Ha ha

Thanks for the help.

Yes, the bad flash method for flashing MS28 drives (or FirmGuard protected drives) only works if you have a VIA chipset.
