I would get either an IBM ThinkPad or a Toshiba Satellite/Tecra/Protégé/Libretto as they a far superior built compare to the others out there. I deal with allot of laptops for repair and I only get these in for user issues such as dropping, water damage or damaged DC jacks.

Stay away from Compaq, HP, Sony, and most Dell laptops except for the High End units. I have seen allot of repetitive issues with these especially with the Sony’s Vaio laptop line. Sony has already over a dozen class action lawsuits involving there product (Series F, FX, GRX, GRZ, GRV, and list goes on). The newer Dells are developing issues with there DC jacks shorting out, if your lucky you’ll only have a damaged DC jack; if your not so lucky it could blow a component on the mainboard. Also, some of the lower end units have over heating problems and memory socket issues (COMPAL Made Boards). In addition, Compal also builds the Compaq/HP laptop systemboards along with allot of third party laptop manufacture such as Sagar.

Well I hope this helps you in your Laptop quest. I presently own a Dell 100L P4 2.8GHZ and I have had only one issue with it. Dell never hooked up the fan for the CPU at factory and it started overheating on me so I opened it up and the wire for the fan was laying on the mainboard:rolleyes: I also own a IBM ThinkPad R30 P3 1GHZ with no issues so far and its over 2yrs old

I've had an IBM Thinkpad T40 which gets used minimum 8 hours a day everyday. Had no issues whatsoever with it so far, and i've had it for over a year.

Ok, im probably going to look for a thinkpad then. Im just worried because it seems like laptops always get screwed up really fast...as in slow down a ton.

I picked up a Compaq R4000 very recently on a Government initiative Scheme.

AMD64 3500+
15.4" Widescreen BrightView TFT screen.
1024MB RAM
100GB HDD
128MB (dedicated) ATI Radeon Express
WiFi (g) and Firewire included.

Not bad for £950. Actually what I'm using right now (!). No problems as of yet.
