I have sucessfully connected my xbox to my PC via a cross-over cable. Now I have purchased a router and can't figure out how to network it all together. Heres what I have so far. My router is connected to my computer and the internet is working properly. I have my xbox hooked to the router. In my network connections I have one connection. (Local Area Connection). Under its properties I have selected obtain IP address automatically. I can't figure out what to do next. Should I set up a seperate connection on my computer? Should I set the same IP address on the xbox and computer? I think I'm actually making this a lot harder than it is..........

From your post, your setup is as follows:

PC connected to router.
Xbox connected to router.
Internet connected to router.

Set the PC to obtain a dynamic IP address from router. It is normally assigned something like 192.168.0.xxx where xxx is 0-255 (which you already have done).

Give the Xbox a static IP address (by going to the dashboard network settings), e.g. 192.168.0.99 (same format 192.168.0.xxx).

If you want to access the internet from your xbox, e.g. RSS feeds, then you need to set the gateway IP address of your xbox to equal the IP address of your router. By default most of them are 192.168.0.1, but check your router documentation to ensure that is the case.

As an example here is my setup:

PC IP = 192.168.0.2
Router IP = 192.168.0.1

Xbox IP Address = 192.168.0.99
Xbox "gateway" IP = 192.168.0.1

Please note that you can also set the Xbox to obtain an IP address automatically, but it does not suit my flat environment, so I don't use it.

It is assumed also that you router does not mind if cross-over cables or standard cables are used. Be mindful of firewalls as well.

Hope it helps.
