Hello all,

I have run into a very weird problem on my home network...

OK, here we go:

* ADSL modem (192.168.1.1)
* Desktop PC (192.168.1.2)
* Laptop (192.168.1.3)
* XBOX (192.168.1.5)
all connected to a hub

I can transfer files, access data from the internet etc...

The problem:
> when tranferring files: XBOX from/to the laptop everything works at high speed (8~10MB/sec)

> when transferring files: FROM the XBOX TO the desktop everything works at high speed as well

BUT
> when transferring files: FROM DESKTOP TO XBOX the speed drops to 400~700 Kb/sec !!

(but when tranferring from Desktop --> Laptop everything works fine!)

Can anyone tell me what the heck is going on ?

(I use the same settings to log into the XBOX ftp server both for my laptop and desktop computer using FlashFXP 3.02)

I've seen this come up a couple of times. No definitive answer yet... but...

If you transfer one BIG (say, 100mb) file what is the speed for that one file? How about multiple files? What software are you using on your xbox for the FTP server?

I've had this problem too, and have determined that it is software related.

well ive noticed that if the file is atleast 20mb each then the transfers will be between 5mb/s and 11mb/s but if its a string of very small files say 1mb each it will say 1,000kb/s but its because it takes sometime to go from file to file. Thats why if you have like 30 small files of about 200k each, it will take more time than a 30mb file would. It is a software problem that is the same thing i noticed between many different clients. Really 30 files of 200k each SHOULD take the exact same time as a file thats 6mb big but it just doesnt work that way.

It doesn't work that way.

You're running into a software problem. You don't have a networking issue. You didn't say what software you're using as a server to transfer these files, but that is going to be your problem. From what *I've* seen, this is common to xbox systems. Perhaps it's a buffering or disk-write issue. I'm not sure how the xbox OS handles disk operations, but there may be something there that causes a delay in releasing EOF write commands. If anyone has expertise in this area feel free to correct me.

Consider transferring your files as one big ZIP file then uncompressing on the box, or using avalaunch/qwix in boost mode for iso's. Otherwise... grab a soda and relax... it will take a few minutes. Still not as much as it could take.

yes, but when uploading files from the laptop to the xbox, the speeds are amazing !!

only when uploading files from the desktop to the xbox it goes slow...

I tried using full duplex on the desktop (instead of auto-sensing) but with no luck.

I also tried using TotalCommander as an FTP client program, but exactly the same thing happened...

I am getting a switcher instead of a hub... I don't think it will work but I'll give it a try :(

I'm not sure if this will make any difference, but I used to have a similar problem between two PC's I have here. One was an iPAQ [desktop not PPC] with and onboard Intel NIC, and the other had a Realtek onboard NIC. After upgrading the Realtek drivers the problem went away.

It’s got to be worth a try. :wink:

I think this might be it... The stupid NIC is a D-Link that costs no more than 10euros.... Well, can't seem to find any driver updates for this specific card....
