you should search on xbox-scene.com, they have a table with harddrives that work on your xbox. I dont have the link sorry. The biggest factor is if the hhd is lockable, if you never plan on booting to the ms dash or go on live it should work. Almost all hhd are lockable according to what I have read.

Just to clear this up:

Locking is a weird method of security for a hard drive and isn't used much now besides in Xboxes. As long as you aren't running the orignal MS bios (like when you're booting from a modchip) the hard drive doesn't need to be locked to run. The only time you need the ability to lock it is if you're going to run the Xbox with your modchip disabled, like for Xbox Live. And even though I subscribe to the "marriage theory" of Xbox Live bans, you're still probably better off not even letting your modded box anywhere near Live.

So unless you're looking to try Live, don't worry about locking.

every hard drive i've tried works, however, some run hotter than others so go for the lowest rpm rate on the hd because it doesn't matter for xbox anyways. So I would have to sat that HD most likely works.

Being new myself it is my unnderstanding that you may not need all that when looking for a HD. Unlike a computer the cahce and rpms do not matter as much and being that it is in such a tight space the faster the drive the hotter the drive. This is something that I may need clearing up myself if I am wrong. Working in a compuer parts wholesaler I get any drives CHEAP so I was wondering the same thing.

Well cache and rpm will always matter.

a bigger internal cache means faster access of prefetched files.

7200rpm will have an increased access time over 5400rpm.

Overall bandwidth won't be improved as the Xbox is limited by the IDE bus.
