new HD locking?

I decided recently that the stock HD int he xbox isn't big enough (the 8gb ... man, i remember the day I was happy when I got a floppy drive! man a whole freaking 1.4MB! now those were the days! ... anyway) so I stuck in there my old 60gb hd, and now the BIOS tells me that I can't lock the HD (hence not being able to get into the stock MS dash). I was just wondering, is it my hard drive that is just too old? or can you just not lock the newer drives?!

You have to be able to write to the eeprom on the hard drive. If your hard drive doesn't support that, then you can't lock it. I seen somewhere on www.xbox-scene.com that someone actually made an online database of hard drives that have failed and succeeded in working for xboxs (stating if they worked with the xbox, if they failed, and if you can write to the eeprom). You should still be able to use your hard drive, however you will not be able to go onto xbox live with it unlocked (because once you disable your chip and bootup, your xbox gives you an error code).

alot of older hard drives have that problem, i put a 40 gig in from an older ibm computer amd 333, it wouldnt work, i bought a new 120 western dig and it worked great, search the forum, i know that table is on here somewhere, just search hard drive locking, that table is pretty good

From my experience, OEM drives are less likely to be able to be locked. I have never had a "Retail" boxed drive from Seagate, Maxtor, Hitachi, or Western Digital not be lockable.

If you are quick and catch the boxing day sale at Future Shop, Western Digital 120 gb hds are only $70 can ( round 45-50 USD).
