My friend asked me to put a X2 2.6 in his XBOX so I opened it up and started soldering. I assumed it was a 1.6 or higher cos it it brand new, but it didnt look right. After a lot of head scratching I looked at the older motherboard installations and it had what looked like an older motherboard in it.

Wierd thing is that I couldnt get the chip to work until I soldered the 5v connection too as per the 1.6 instructions.

Have I missed something here????

It probably was an older board - possibly a 1.4/1.5.

Did you remove pin 6 as you thought it was a 1.6? Be aware the 1.4/1.5 does NOT have the same voltage on the regulator as the 1.6 does.

I did. DOH! I better put it back in tonight and see if it all works OK. It did boot but I only left it only left it on for a few seconds so hopefully no harm done.

Just didnt expect a 1.4/1.5 to be in a brand new out of the box XBOX when all the others I'd done recently had been 1.6. Was worried there was a new motherboard out there for a bit!

The theory is that MS are getting shot of all 'older' boards to make way for the 360..... Speculative, I know...

Would putting the alternative 5v connector on the chip when it's a 1.4 board possibly affect the sound? The xbox is working perfectly fine except sound only works through the optical output (which the owner of the xbox doesnt have but I do).
