I did. For me, it would only work when the 5v wire was plugged in the chip and attached to the mobo. So i would say yea it's a must, could be wrong tho. It's pretty cool how they set it up to attach. Just attach the hook on to the board and ur set.
yes you do have to use the 5v connector for a 1.6install - how else is the chip going to get any power? on the old 1.0 - 1.5 mobos 5v was obtained from the LPC but that all changed on the 1.6!!!!!
also as you are installing on a 1.6 you need to rebuild the LPC bus - but you should have the LPC rebuild kit bundled with you chip.
and incase you were wondering about what the last guy meant by saying it's quite cool how the 5v just hooks on - he is using a Xapter to perform a solderless install. If you are soldering don't worry about the hook remark he made.
a guide to show you where to obtain alternative 5v can be found here:
Well, I have the lpc rebuilt using the PCB board on one xbox and one we did it without the pcb. This is why I qualify for newb of the year, you see, because everything is installed just fine...for some reason I thought that the alternate 5v was for the solderless install so I never hooked it up.
If it works fan after putting the alt.1.5 in, I will have someone slap me. Promise.
