first off, welcome to the forums

just take your time and make sure that you have everything that you will need in front of you before you start soldering on your xbox.

like all of your soldering supplies, latest bios, dashboards, etc.....

take it slow and easy and don't rush it. a lot of ppl come in here and start bitching about this and that when all it would have taken is a little prep work and not rushing to get the chip installed in record time.

i myself took about an hour and half to install each of the two xboxes that i have done, and both work flawless.

remember to read all the tuts and search for the answers to the questions that you may have if a problem should come up.

Well......

my story so far....

Laid out all my parts and tools, I new this was going to go wrong before I started as my only iron was from a 100000 piece tool kit from Argos.

My first mistake was to pull off the IDE cable from my DVD drive, not realising the connection was not removable like the HD connection.

How ever I managed to push the cable back through the pins and supper glued back the black plastic secure strip.

Now for my big mistake using my iron which had the head the size of a spade, but I was so excited I thought I could manage it.

Managed to get every thing soldered, the work was crap especially round the LPC rebuild.

Stated the box up, the X FRAGED but would boot up in MS-xbox so I knew I must of done something right.

Deep down I knew my soldering was sh*t, so the next day I went to Maplins a brought a better, adjustable iron so I could increase the temp as I personally prefer a hotter iron then what a 30w can provide.

Tried re-solder some points, this time my xbox told me I needed a service.

No other choice but to take everything off and clean the points and go again, this time I did not use the supplied LPC bridge as it was looking slightly rough.

I also notice I had burnt out the LAD0 point slightly, this really pissed me off, I managed to scrape the point with a needle (not the best of tools to do this with, but it was 3 in the morning, had no choice :( ) in order for the solder to take hold IT WORKED !!!!

So now every thing was soldered back on, clean joints and all.

Turned on the box, still no good so I messed around with the pro dip switch and HAY PRESTO!!! I found out the bios was set to the 1mb bank.

Works a treat!!! all I need now is to flash the bios and find a good dash board and read some more.

So I guess my story is...

. make sure you have half descent tools for the job, best advice get a solder sucker before u start.

. If you have not soldered before then the best tools in the world won't help practice first say on an old radio PCB always making sure the power is off ;)

. And always think before you make that move, triple check you're soldering making sure every wire is in the right position.

Just a side note, the IDE connector on the DVD drive does unplug, sounds like your connector is a tad stuffed (I've had a few cheap ones do the same thing). If you start having problems it may be worth getting a new cable, it's just a standard ATA IDE cable.

Hey,
You forgot the best advice of all. Practice soldering on something other than your xbox before you actually attempt an install.

Also, if your going to replace that IDE cable then you should upgrade to a ATA166 cable.

Just a quick not of caution, a little solder goes a long way. You will be working in a lot of tight places and your red/blue/grey cable are the trickiest. Do not cheat these wires of tape. This will ensure your weld holds to the actual board joints. Take care. Haste makes waste.....

That is very bad idea if you ever are going to mod more xbox's. I and many other people would HIGHLY suggest to you, to use a 15w Iron, at MOST. The Xbox's Motherboard is very fragile and can be easily damaged when using too high watt of an Iron. Sounds like you lucked out this time.

Hi all, thanks for you replies you have made me feel welcomed :)

I'm happy to say that im now up a running with dash, and apps.

This piece of kit is great and I would recommend.

My experience has been flawless compared to some other posts I have read.

The best advice off all, apart from not practicing soldering on your Xbox BCP :) "that would make a good sig" is to read the newbie guide, and all other doc's as all the information you need is there.

Btw, a good way to practice soldeirng is to get a pack of 2- resistors and a pc board..

Modded logic board into new dvd drive is this possible?

Hello all 1st day on this site,

I am getting the open trey error after many months of using my modded 360. I have the lite-on dvd drive and would like to swap it out with a new one. Can I safely put my modded logic board onto a new liteon dvd drive in order to make it read dvds again or will this mess the whole thing up?
Ive never had to replace a moded liteon dvd drive b4 and would like some input.

Thanks,
Lou

yes this is what most people refer to as board swapping, you will need to desolder some wires on the board and resolder them to the new drive after that it should work like a champ.
