Newbie questions about internet, kinect, and avatar

I have a JTAG 360. I have updated the dash, the xex menu, , FSD, and 360 system update. When running a network test, I can connect to the network, but it fails when connecting to the internet; and subsequently Xbox Live. I do have logging into XBL blocked, and I don't know if that is related or not. By the way, this is a wired connection. I don't even know if it matters that this test fails. The only reason I need the internet at all is to receive cover art.

Another issue I have is the avatar is grey, and the kinect flashes a message upon bootup, that it needs an update to work. I put the update on a cd and ran it. It tells me that the system is up to date. If that is the case, then why doesn't the kinect work anymore, and why are my avatars still grey?

I'd appreciate any wisdom you can impart. Thanks in advance.

you need to run the official update from ms,for the same dash/kernel ur box is already on to get avatar and kinect data back on it.also as long as ur getting an ip assigned in net connection your fine to dl cover art.
put whatever official update u got for the dash ur on on usb flash drive, rename $systemupdate to $$ystemupdate and put it in 360 after going back to stock ms dash not freestyle dash.then it should run.

Thank you for the message. I thought that's what I did already. I only saw one official update to install. I will let you know that I am running:

D:2.0.16537.0 K:2.0.16537.0 (BK:2.0188.0)

I will look to see if I can find a specific update for that dash/kernal. When I looked before, I found only one on the Xbox site. I put that on a CD and ran it in the stock MS dash. When I try to run it again it tells me that the system is up to date. Still no avatar or kinect. I will look again for another update as you suggested.

If you are running 16537, then i would suggest looking into the xebuild/dashlaunch updater as the latest dash is 16547, and if you are going through the trouble of updating, it makes the process easy, just download the latest dash in J-Runner and the latest system update from microsoft, and extract it to path_to_jrunner\Xebuild\16547. Then all you have to do is open dashlaunch installer on the xbox, and enable updserv option(leave installer running). then go back to j-runner, and change tabs to update, and hit the update button. This will easily update your system, and install avatar/kinect data for u, and it takes less then 5 minutes, if you already have the files.

I will give that a go. When I try doing it the other way with the 16537, whether I run from USB, DVD or external drive, I only see an update splash for a moment. I select it to run, but it does nothing. Once the dash is loaded there is nothing I can do because it sees it as a mixed data CD. I will try the xebuild method you suggested.

Ok I was able to get it updated to 16537. I was trying to understand the rest of your directions, when the new update recognized the system update CD still in my Xbox. Long story short, I have avatars and I no longer have a blinking Kinect. The connect still will not work with games though. Each time I restart the Xbox, it still prompts me for an update. When I select ok to update, it seems to bypass it very quickly. When I run a game that uses the Kinect, I still get:

The Kinect Sensor needs an update.

To get the update, restart your consile. If the problem persists,, unplug your sensor and visit, www.xbox.com/support

When I try to install the update in case something didn't go right initially, I get:

Can't process the update. If problem persists, go to www.xbox.com/support

Status Code:
40A3 - 0000 - C000 - 0700 - 8000 - 4005

Any ideas?

Ok, I found this on some obscure Google+ profile:

If Microsoft Kinect sensor update fails with error 40A3-0000-C000-0700-8000-4005 than you need to turn off automatic Live sign-in policy.

Go to the Settings -> Profile -> Sign-in Preferences and set Profile Auto Sign-in to Off, than restart console and start the update again.

It seems to have accepted the update. Now my FSD looks nothing like how I had it. I guess I can set all of that back up again.

Thanks for your help and patience, Gavin.

yeah, they really need to change the guide, as the update feature is much easier, and more reliable, and the average user is much less likely to screw it up.

Updating the system kernel and avatars has zero effect on your FSD setup. FSD is an app which you auto-boot. If it's different, it's because you changed something.

No nothing was changed. All I did was update and then it went back to the default look. Not a big deal. I set the colors and everything back to the way I had it.
