hi my xbox didnt power up when i installed my new blue led fan, and i checked out the power supply and it snapped with electricity and nearly fried me. what confuses me is that it has powered up a few times since then (rarely). has anyone else has the same problem and what did they do? or can anyone shed light on the matter? the obvious thing to do is change the power supply but is there more too it than that? thnx

Define "Snapped with electricity" Arc, smoke if so from where. Did you let a piece of wire or metal fall init? Depending on what occured, you might have fried more than just the power supply. Only real way to tell is to swap it out with a known working one. I would suggest stop trying to power it on, you might do more damage.

Where did you get the power from for the new fan?
What did you touch on the PSU?

Did the smoke leak out? --- that's sure sign you broke something.

well i know i havnt fried anything else because before i moved it from the box i unplugged it from everything else (im cautious you see :)). erm it was a spark that came from the middlish bit. it happened so fast i couldnt tell exactly where from. so if it helps it came from the middle. any suggestions?

You probably discharged one of the electrolytic capacitors on the PSU... There is quite a big smoothing one near the middle that sorts out your DC ripple. If the PSU had been recently plugged in then these Caps would still hold some charge and would let if go if somthing made a connection across theirt two solder points. That is what the crack would have been.. It is unusual for this to fry anything else though...Perhaps you have been unlucky and it made contact with and fried the chopper transistor (that is the transistor near the middle of the PSU on a heatsink I think) or popped the fuse (The fuse on these PSU's look a bit like a black resistor!)
http://www.xbox-scene.com/articles/replace-fuse.php Have a look here at the fuse.

Sorry, this isn't a great deal of help.. Good luck mate.

your talking about all this fuse business but wont it be just as easy to replace the power supply unit?

If you have modded your box yourself you can replace the fuse a piece of piss.. Check it to see if it is open circuit and if it is, just whip it out and change it..

If you can't get a proper fuse then you can just get an in-line fuse holder, solder that in and pop a 13A house fuse into it (it should be 15A but going lower will not cause any damage.). You could even get some 15A fuse wire and make a new fuse (That is what I would do! - remember, it is just a bit if wire!). It is really easy.. As for the Chopper transistor, they too are easy to fit and cost pennies..
