I have searched the forum and cant find the answer to this question...

My xbox wont display video with the original bios... i read that the original MS bios is probably corrupt and installing a mod chip should fix this problem. I orderd the X3CE and have not installed it yet. Will this fix the problem or should i get a new box? I dont want to install a perfectly good mod chip on a possibly dead box. Anyways......... Sorry for being a noob, and if i posted this in the wrong section. But any info would help. (Also every once in a while it does actually work.)

Rule of thumb when modding is to start with a "clean slate" that way you don't have anything unaccounted for causing problems. You could try to mod the Xbox but if the issue is not the Xbox's native BIOS then the problem will "bleed" through and result in a waste of your time. If it isn't the BIOS then it's definitely video decoder related; something that the X3 will not cover.

My suggestion would be to get a Xapt3r solderless adapter and see if you can get it working that way.

BTW, has this Xbox ever been the target of an attempted modification or is it a fresh one? Have you tried different A/V cables (they can go 'bad') on different TV's (just to rule out that variable)? What brought about this problem, was it spontaneous or something more dramatic (i.e. - a fall/drop)?

Well asfar as i can tell it is a fresh one. It could have been dropped but i only paid $30 for it and it would not be a terrible loss. I have tried different cables and it worked one time, which was the determining factor of me buying the mod chip. I have access to several other boxes as well. All sitting arround $50 so i think i should pickup the 1.6 and see if that one will work.

Also would a dead dvd drive cause the issue?
I hijacked my friends drive and the xbox seemed to come on more frequently.

Anyways...... Thank you for the help

I don't think the DVD drive is the cause of the issue, considering the fact that it still works sporadically even with your friend's installed.

When you get no video does it seem like the Xbox is booting normally or does it just hang? Can you hear the audio?

So you started with a 1.6 with No video but has sound. I have same thing, I have X3 CE also. It is right out of package, Xbox still doesn't have video. Do you have to add or change Bios on X3. If so how did you load bios to x3.

i actually started with a 1.3 that had no video out. all i can say is to just mod the board and try it. you're out a 150 bucks any way so what is another 60 if you screw up......... it just might work like mine did.
all that i did was install the chip. change my controller to an original microsoft one, and flashed the bios via http... and what do you know it works.

If your problem is the same then a correctly functioning X3 should allow you to bypass the faulty M$ BIOS. If you still get a blank screen after the X3 is installed one of these is to blaim:

1) Faulty install
2) Different problem (with seemingly the same effect)
3) You are using the High Definition A/V cable

Since FlashBIOS does not support the HD cables try giving the stock ones a try before you attempt a repair of your install or any other diagnostics.
