Hi all.

Just a quick query regarding the above topic.

I have a lite-on dg16d2s in a flashed phat Xbox.

The console is working fine reading originals and backups incl xdg3.

My only issue is that the drive is very noisy as it loads a game, like when the laser is accessing a point on the disk.

It is the original laser in a well used 2009 Jasper, and I wondered if a new laser or lubricating the rails etc would suffice or I would require a drive motor.

From searching old posts it suggests better media and slower burn speed. I use verbatim .003 at 4x and it is equally noisy playing originals.

Thanks

Lasers can give some noise but it is normally the worm gear that moves the laser back and forwards that causes the noise, I have just ordered 5 for consoles I have here.

Hi Utmad

Thanks for the quick response. As you have ordered five recently can I ask where you ordered from? I see eBay has them! Also seeing as I would have the drive apart, do you think that it would make sense to change the laser too?

Cheers

If the laser is struggling then yes but check it with a multimeter first. Should be above 3ohm

As for the noise, lube the worm drive up and clear out any crap thats in there.

Cleaning them some times works but once the motor is knackered that's the end as it sealed.

Thanks for the assistance folks.

I did see DX had them cheaper, but I only need one and being a pretty impatient individual I will probably just get one from UK!

That said, I will clean up the current one and lubricate it to see if I can improve the noise levels. Can you advise what the white grease is on these parts and where to buy in UK?

Thanks again

I have a spare one from a drive I needed for other parts if you are interested?

And you want some white lithium grease as lube, none of that sh*t your mum/wife/sister/brother uses! ;)

Hi

Yeah, I would be interested in the one you have going. Would rather give money to benefit someone on here anyway!

Have a halfords virtually round the corner, so will look for white lithium grease too.

You can send me a pm with cost etc if you like.

Thanks again

Just a quickie to say that I received the worm drive from Red Impact the other day and fitted it today and used white lithium grease on all the moveable parts and have to say that it is definitely quieter than the one I took out. I cleaned it up and will keep it as a backup but for those with a noisy drive, replacing the worm drive did the trick and was a straightforward job even for me.

Thanks folks for the suggestions and Red Impact for supplying the drive.
