OK here we go I have PS2 in my position that will not load DVD media. I know this has nothing to do with Xbox but I've posted this question all over PS2 scenes major forums and everyone must be sleeping. Which is pretty much typical of that scene "Yawn"

My POST

I have a version 9 PS2 that will not acknowledge that a DVD is in the drive but yet plays CD's and CD based PS/PS2 games fine. It acts like there is no disk in the drive no matter what type of DVD is placed in it. I have tried changing the POT adjustment for the DVD and still no change. Also played with the Sled height adjustment without success.

I checked the coils for the Laser and they are within specs 6.1/5.9 ohms. So if any one has encounter such a problem I would like to now.

P.S. This unit is un-modded (virgin) and in very good condition.

I am going to order a new laser and
LA6508 for it just rule them out, but I do not believe that is it issue. I am hoping that is all thats wrong with it. If not I have a working spares to test with.

Hey, you posted in General chat so I guess it's ok...

Had this before on a PS2. Was the sled height causing the problem although at the time I was 100% convinced it was the laser.

What levels did you set the pots to?

I messed with the sled level with no change and as for the DVD POT I took it down to 900 ohms did not want to go any further and damage the laser or LM6508 chip. What is weird is it does to seem to react to DVD media at all as if the drive was empty, except the spindle does turn. I also notice that when the spindle spins up it does not crank up faster like the PS2 normally does when it senses DVD media. I just purchased the laser for it hope that’s all it is. I have feeling it's not seeing it does not sense the DVD media which means it might be a logic chip. And that brings up another question what chip controls that function.

I am starting to research some of the chips on the mainboard to find what they are and what they do. This starting to sound like my Hero Jr resurrection project without the schematics and reverse engineering the layout component by component.

***************************UPDATE************************

Ok, I received the New laser for the PSDOO but it turns out its used and the POTs have been already overly adjusted by 25% (CD=689 ohms DVD=1059 ohms). Was able after an hour or so to get it to read a DVD but barely. It will not read CD's no matter what adjustment are made to the Sled or Azimuth.

I’ve had good luck in the past buying off EBay but this has left a sour taste in my mouth. I have already contacted the seller and he says he will exchange it. So we will see if he sends me a NEW one or if I have to pull a Paypal refund….

Yeah I had a seller offer an xbox "unknown condition, not working, good for parts". When it arrived it had every single item swapped out for faulty ones. hdd was an aftermarket dead one. motherboard had connectors broken, dvd drive wouldn't open or close...

Makes you think twice before ordering again.

Well I think that Crap laser I bought blew my LM chip, because I can no longer read CD's now and the readings at that chip are way off. So I ordered a new LM6508 and laser from a reputable online retailer.

See what happens you become tight with the cash it bites you in the ass. Now its costing more than it would of in the first place if I bought from some one reputable. Dude is defiantly getting a double NEGATIVE from me.:D

I have seen a lot of damaged xbox's listed on ebay and the same sellers have a list of them, all with the same problem. Some people should not be allowed to open up an xbox when they can't solder to save their life. Good luck with ur laser.

I've said it before and I'll say it again: The Xbox is too easy to modify now. If we were still limited to the 29 wire mod, you wouldn't see half these Xboxes damaged because the 'kids' with over powered soldering irons and ZERO experience wouldn't even bother attempting it.

Yea my first console mod was a PS2 and its still working to this day, except for the laser is starting to die slowly so I keep bumping the CD POT:D. One of these days I break down and buy a new laser for it.

As Martin said the Xbox is so easy to mod that almost every one that has one will try and mod it.

Looks like XBOX is gonna be an endangered species if all the noobs that can't solder start burning up traces with overpowered irons.
