noob/mod chips?

I have read through the tutorials and browsed the forums....just to clarify to play backed up games all you need to do is flash your 360 drive? and of course burn the games accordingly. If this is the case I have seen mod chips out there for the 360 -what do they do? As far as backing up games - what programs would you recommend or use?

The firmware mod does the same as the modchip

The firmware mod is easier
